2013 Shelby GT500 with Smart Launch Control

2013 Shelby GT500 with Smart Launch Control - Muscle Cars BlogDEARBORN, Mich., May 17, 2012 – Paraphrasing a classic quote – “With great power comes the need for great control” – the engineers at Ford’s Special Vehicles Team have stepped up to the plate to manage the massive output of the 2013 Shelby GT500.

Whether a driver is a track-day veteran or getting his first ultra-high-performance sports car, the new launch control system on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will help ensure he gets smooth, consistent and fast starts every time.

Uncontrolled wheel spin is generally undesirable, whether commuting to work or racing away from the Christmas tree on a Friday night at the drag strip. Both safety and performance suffer when the wheels can’t get enough grip on the road. However, properly regulated, some wheel slip can be your friend.

“Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction control system that integrates the brake and engine management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve in order to achieve maximum thrust,” explains John Pfeiffer, senior engineer, SVT Vehicle Engineering. “With so much more power and torque on tap from the new 5.8-liter V8, launch control makes it easier for drivers to take advantage of the performance.”

With launch control enabled, the driver just has to press the accelerator pedal to the floor and then smoothly and quickly release the clutch pedal just as he normally would when executing a clean start. The difference is that the electronics will automatically hold the engine steady at the desired speed and manage the rear brakes to allow the optimum amount of wheel slip for maximum traction. 2013 Camaro 1LE: 426-hp, 1g cornering - Muscle Cars BlogDETROIT – The road-racing inspired Camaro 1LE performance package returns for 2013 with unique gearing, suspension tuning, and tires that makes the model capable of more than 1 g of lateral acceleration and a sub-three minute lap time at Virginia International Raceway’s Grand Course. It is offered on Camaro SS coupes with manual transmissions.

“The Camaro 1LE combines the best elements of the SS and ZL1 to take road-racing performance to a whole new level,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “That the 1LE breaks the three-minute lap at VIR puts it in the upper echelon of performance cars. That it starts under $40,000 makes the Camaro 1LE one of the most affordable, most capable track-day cars offered by any manufacturer.”

In anticipation of consumers entering the 1LE in amateur-racing events, Chevrolet is pursuing SCCA approval of the 1LE package for Touring Class competition. Read more!

Afterburner: Hennessey Venom GT Hits the Dyno

20-Dec-2010

ROAD & TRACK Magazine features the Venom GT on the Cover of their February, 2011 issue. How does a streetable 933 horsepower at the rear wheels sound? How about 874 lb-ft of torque at the tires? It sounds mighty tasty to us, especially considering that those numbers come courtesy of regular 93 octane pump gas (no race fuel here, kiddies) and, again, are at the wheel. Ditch the drivetrain loss and power at the crank will easily crest 1,000 ponies. Check out the gallery of this awesome and powerful Hennessey Venom GT!

Power Struggle – The Ultimate Hot Pursuit incl. Stig

05-Nov-2010

The chase is on, this November. In the second part of November, the world of racing games as we know it will change. At least this is the promise made by EA and Criterion Games when it comes to the release of the latest Need for Speed title, perhaps the most anticipated in years, Hot Pursuit.

Until the game arrives in stores though, EA thought to taunt us some more with the extraordinary cars which will be featured in the game. Enter a new promo video, this time for real: real cars, real road, real people.

And not just your everyday people. EA and Criterion called upon British grime music band Roll Deep and the man formerly known as the Stig, Ben Collins, for a little chase-me-down the street gimmick.

The video is just a teaser to a complete chase between a pair of Lambos Porsche 911 GT3s. How it all worked out we’ll see on November 8th.

Hot Pursuit, a revival of the successful original title, will introduce a whole new feature for online play, called Need for Speed Autolog. Through Autolog, players can compare racing stats and automatically get personalized gameplay recommendations.

It features pretty much all the cars which represent something in today’s world, including Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, Ford Shelby GT500, Audi TT RS Coupe, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman S and Dodge Challenger SRT8. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and Ford Shelby GT500 will only be available in the Limited Edition version of the game.

The game will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii.

2011 Ford F150 EcoBoost – Log Skidder – Real Torque

04-Nov-2010

Hi, guys, this was awesome – Ford took the F-150 EcoBoost into the forest, where it shot a series of Web-based documentaries about what the truck can do. Simply put, the F-150 was forced to pull some logs through the narrow roads of the forest, just to show that the 420 lb.-ft of torque are for real. The truck pulled logs weighing from 4,000 to 9,000 pounds, heavy enough to kick into action the truck’s great torque/rpm combination (420 lb.-ft. at 2,500 rpm). Did it manage to impress?
