Start under the hood: That’s a Gessford Machine (Hastings, NE) built, 100% new, all aluminum FE 427 with a Paxton NOVI 1200 blower hanging off the side. Gessford not only builds huge horsepower motors they’re licensed by Shelby and their motors receive CSX numbers upon completion. You want a real Shelby mill? Gessford can build you one from stock to insane, which is about the end of the spectrum where this beast lies. The foundation is a Shelby aluminum block, stuffed with a Shelby billet crank, H beam connecting rods and low compression (for the boost) forged pistons. The heads are Shelby pieces as well, styled after the “medium riser” Ford pieces but with larger 2.25/1.75 valves and more efficient ports. Up front, you’ll find a Shelby cast aluminum timing cover and water pump while a single plane Shelby intake resides on top. While that would be enough power for most, this isn’t a car for the masses, so Gessford added a Paxton NOVI 1200 supercharger hanging from custom billet engine brackets for even more go power. We figure the motor’s worth better than 700HP, and Gessford’s tab was north of $40,000. Supporting pieces include the MSD 6BTM ignition box and billet distributor, a set of ceramic coated headers, a mega dollar AVIAID dual kickout fabricated aluminum oil pan and Florida Central Machine spark plug wires. There’s an SFI damper up front and an SFI aluminum flywheel inside the scattershield in back. The polished blower, discharge piping and the fabricated and Shelby-logo’d valve covers handle the show duties. The headers dump into 2.’5” pipes with Magnaflow mufflers before exiting through the rockers-you have to hear this car to believe it. This is a serious sounding and running engine with few equals on the street.

The rest of the drivetrain is up to the task, with an aluminum crossflow radiator and dual fans handling the cooling, a hydraulically operated heavy duty clutch sending power to the TREMEC TKO500 transmission and a custom driveshaft leading back to a FAB9 3.70:1 9” rear axle with Strange axles and a Detroit Locker. There’s no hack job here, either-Exotic Concepts in Longwood, Florida, did the work. Sure, some cars look the part, and some even have huge engines, but how many do you see with ALL of the proper supporting equipment?

Stay underneath and see the chassis is all there, too. An ABS master cylinder with electrically operated Hydroboost powers Wilwood four piston calipers with two piece drilled rotors. There’s an adjustable proportioning valve for fine tuning and aluminum rotor hats for less unsprung weight. Total Control’s front suspension setup with coilover shocks, fabricated control arms with Heim joints, rack and pinion steering and a billet strut tower brace. Out back you’ll find a fully adjustable four link suspension with coilovers and a Panhard rod. Again, many pretenders but very few cars go this far!

The visuals are all in place, too. The already beautiful fastback body looks downright deadly in its Eleanor body kit and Super Snake bulge hood. There’s a racing style fuel filler in the C pillar, big PIAA driving lights in the gaping grille, full rocker panels with aluminum exhaust tips, hood pins, stripes and all new glass and trim. New chrome pieces from the door handles down add sparkle while the “wow” factor gets turned up to 11 with the Compomotive 17” TRUE knockoff wheels and tri-bar center caps, wrapped in Dunlop 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 HTR Z tires. The body is perfectly smooth, the work of known Shelby expert Dave Miller in Florida. All of the Shelby pieces are in place from the big snakes to the sequential taillights out back. Is there any wonder this car took down the best of show trophy in its only outing?

The cockpit is an excellent place to while away the miles, or to be a complete hooligan-the car does either with aplomb. You’re sitting in very comfortable leather racing seats and held in place with RJS camlock harnesses. Your left hand is on the Moto-Lita wood wheel with Shelby center cap (all atop a tilt column) while your right hand finds the shifter with the awesome “GO BABY GO” shift knob. Look over your right shoulder-that’s a 10lb NOS nitrous bottle hooked to the Ny-Trex wet system in the engine bay. It’s jetted for a 125HP shot, for those just-in-case moments! The center console features a new Shelby armrest pad, a custom stainless insert with power window switches, fuel pump and nitrous arming switches, and three of the Auto Meter Phantom series gauges you’ll find everywhere you look. ’67 Door panels were tapped for duty (they’re a cleaner look) with wheel center cap logos over the holes where the window cranks would normally poke through. How’s that for detailed? A four point rollbar, the nitrous bottle and a fiberglass rear seat delete ride behind you, while a fire extinguisher rides shotgun. We wouldn’t want you to be uncomfortable, either, so there’s an Old Air Products heating and air conditioning system installed. And yes, it’s as cool to be in here as you’re thinking.

Few cars get everything right, and this is one of them. We’re no stranger to customs and pro touring cars, and we can honestly tell you this beast is a standout. From ozone depleting burnouts to taking down trophies everywhere to cruising in style and comfort this car does it all!

First of all, the Candyapple Red over Saddle color combination is extremely rare, with fewer than 8% of 1968 Shelbys being configured in the same way. Second, it is a documented, numbers-matching car with original invoices, order sheets, and a Marti report. Finally, it IS a GT500 after all—428 cubic inches of big block Ford in a killer, race-bred package. Buy it, drive it, and watch its value stay rock-solid.

Restored by noted Mustang restorer Bob Wilson several years ago, this snake started out as an extremely clean original piece that was really straddling the line between “superior survivor” and“in need of restoration.” The ensuing restoration was done to extremely high standards and the car has been driven less than 50 miles since completion. Today it is in outstanding condition throughout, with excellent panel gaps, and gorgeous Candyapple Red paint. The fiberglass pieces on this car are high quality reproduction units, which really is a good thing since the originals often fit so poorly that no amount of rework can make them look as good as they do on this car. The GT500 stripes along the rocker panels are accurate, and you’ve probably also noticed that this is a stripe-delete car, which is very unusual. The paint is deep, rich, and lustrous, and I can’t find any evidence that this car has ever been driven on the road. If a bright red Shelby big block can be subtle and sophisticated, this is it. The trim is also show quality throughout, from the S H E L B Y block letters on the hood and deck to the polished stainless steel rocker and windshield moldings. Speaking of the windshield, it’s a correct Carlite “Sunvisor” piece with the markings in the center. The bumpers are fresh chrome, the grille surround is perfect, the hood pins are correct, and the argent silver tail panel is as-new. The trick sequential taillights are fully functional, too!

Under the hood, you’ll find a highly detailed S-code 428 cubic inch V8 painted the correct shade of Ford Blue and topped by a single 4-barrel carburetor. Factory rated at 355 horsepower, everyone pretty much acknowledges that these motors crank out substantially more than that. This one has been fully rebuilt to stock specs, then fully dressed for show duty at the highest levels. The original thermactor emissions control system is intact and functional, the hoses and clamps are correct, and there is a new Autolite battery in its tray. The original Shelby data tag is still affixed to the inner fender. This car is also loaded with luxury features like power steering and power disc brakes, as well as the Extra Cooling Package whose radiator has been restored to new condition up front. Engine bays simply do not get any nicer—this one is proverbially “eat off of it” immaculate.

Behind the engine there’s a durable numbers-matching C-6 automatic transmission that has also been rebuilt and reinstalled in the highly detailed chassis. And before you frown on automatic-equipped muscle cars, remember that automatics were often the transmission of choice for hardcore racers simply because of their consistency. In fact, this car comes with a copy of a period road test pitting a GT500 with an automatic against a 427/435 Corvette, and the editors found the GT500 incredibly potent, but a lot more civilized—which is exactly where Ford was headed when they took over Shelby’s operation. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

The rest of the chassis is exceptional—if anything, the restorer was TOO careful with his workmanship and things are TOO tidy under there. The floors are the correct red oxide primer, the finishes on the front suspension are correct, and the proper markings and paint stripes are present on things like the driveshaft and axle. The brakes are freshly rebuilt, the front end is all new, and the 3.50 geared 9-inch rear is correctly detailed with a painted housing and red oxide primer center section. Despite the Shelby’s minimal exhaust system with glasspack-style mufflers, this car is quiet and smooth, belying its dual personality.

Wheels are authentic Shelby 10-spoke alloys (with tapered spokes, not straight ones like the reproductions) with reproduction E70-15 Goodyear Speedway tires.

I’ve seen a lot of Shelbys, but very, very few with a Saddle tan interior as on this car. It’s a great change from the usual black, and really gives this car an upscale look. Again, with the Shelby and the GT500 in particular, Ford was straddling the luxury/performance fence with both available in large doses. Of course, as part of a top-flight restoration, there are fresh materials everywhere in this Décor interior. The seats, door panels, carpet and padded center console are new. The wood graining has been refinished as new, and the gauges (even the cool auxiliary gauges in the console) are freshly restored. The correct Shelby logo has been embossed in the center armrest, and the correct seat belts hang from the Shelby-only roll bar behind the front seats. You’ll also notice that this luxury-oriented snake offers a tilt steering wheel, tachometer, and an AM radio that works perfectly.

The trunk is just as good as the interior, with a matching spare, correct jack, and fresh trunk mat.

Documentation on this ’68 Shelby GT500 is substantial. There are original invoices and order sheets from Shelby Automotive, Inc. We also have an original owner’s manual, which is a stapled-together booklet that looks incredibly crude but that was what Ol’ Shel was all about—who cares about frills? There’s also a complete Marti report detailing this car’s production facts and figures. There are those reproductions of original ads that I mentioned in the beginning, and copies of articles on the GT500 from a variety of sources. This car is also registered with the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) and is listed in their registry with an ownership history.

For reasons that aren’t altogether clear to me, Shelby Mustangs are still lagging behind their Mopar and General Motors contemporaries in terms of value. If a six-figure Mustang can be considered a bargain, this one is it, because many indicators suggest that the prices of these cars will continue to go up while prices on the overheated Hemis and LS6 Chevelles have started to deflate. Nobody is surprised by this, of course, since all along most folks figured only the Shelbys were valued appropriately. Now is the time to move on this one—correct, documented, and freshly restored, its value is well established. If previous trends are any indication, this one will continue to inch its way up the value scale, making it the ideal car to invest in today. Shelby Mustang values haven’t gone crazy, there isn’t any fear of a “market correction” in their future, and transaction rates have been strong. Good Shelbys always find new homes, and this one is one of the nicer ones available today. Make a move before the market does and enjoy the stability that comes from a blue-chip investment.

Ever since Ford introduced the 3.7L V6 and 5.0L V8 Mustang for the 2011 model year, the Shelby research and development team has been secretly developing the GTS package. Once the Shelby GT350 was finalized in both coupe and convertible versions, the skunkworks team accelerated the project. Working with partners at Ford Racing, Borla and Baer, Shelby American enhanced the car’s suspension, strengthened the braking and coaxed more power out of the engine.

“The V6 Mustang is a particularly good platform for the Shelby GTS,” noted Shelby American vice president of operations Gary Patterson. “It’s even lighter and more nimble than the GT. And the V6 Shelby GTS makes about as much horsepower as the V8 in the Ford Shelby GT, but with better fuel economy at a lower price.”

“Last year, we brought back the GT350 45 years after it was launched,” said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. “They look and sound just like the ones we built in 1965. We’re repeating history by offering two additional colors and building a few convertibles for the second year of production.” Read more!

Shelby American built 562 total GT350 fastback coupes in 1965; all were painted white with blue stripes. In 1966, Shelby added more color options for the hardtops. Four convertibles were also built; today they are among the most collectible Shelbys in the world.

“Delays in the delivery of the new five liter Mustang last year resulted in fewer 45th Anniversary GT350 coupes than expected in the 2011 model year,” added John Luft, president of Shelby American. “For the 2012 model year, we brought back the first GT350 convertible since 1970 and ramped up production to meet the expected demand. Our plan is to only build 350 total 2012 model year GT350s to maintain exclusivity and future collectability.”

The Shelby GT350 is a post-title program based on the Ford Mustang GT. The 2012 Shelby GT350 performance specs will be continued from the 2011 model year. Customers can choose a 430 HP normally aspirated, 525 HP supercharged or 624 HP supercharged version. An automatic transmission is optional with the normally aspirated engine, as well as a short throw shifter for the manual.

Color combinations for the 2012 Shelby GT350s include Performance White with blue LeMans stripes, Race Red with white LeMans stripes and Kona Blue with white LeMans stripes. The convertible will offer a new optional light bar; other options include a one piece drive shaft and color coordinated billet aluminum engine cap set.

“When it comes to performance of the current generation GT350, our team did a great job right out of the gate,” quipped Gary Patterson, vice president of operations at Shelby American. “The GT350 leaves its mark on the street that says ‘a Shelby was here.’ That’s why we’re packing the ’12 model with all the same performance as the 2011 Shelby’s.”

LAS VEGAS – October 7, 2010 – Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK) has released the official performance specs of the supercharged and normally aspirated post title packages for the Shelby GT350, as well as a new higher horsepower option for the 5.0 liter powered car. With up to 624 horsepower on tap via an optional “R” tune, the 2011 Shelby GT350 is one of the most powerful limited production cars in the world. Read more!

“Our goal was to build the ultimate small block muscle car,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “The results show that the Shelby GT350 takes American performance to an entirely new level. In recent tests, the standard supercharged car hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds and ran the quarter in 12 seconds flat at 121.4 mph, all while generating 1.05g of lateral acceleration and stopping from 60 mph in only 107 feet. We believe the ‘R’ tuned GT350 will be even faster.”

The normally aspirated GT350 is available in standard Ford Mustang GT trim for SCCA racing or 430 in the optional tune. The standard supercharged version is rated at 525 horsepower while the “R” tune option delivers 624 horsepower. All versions include Shelby performance suspension, brake, tire/wheel, and interior and exterior styling enhancements that make the GT350 as fast on the curves as it is in the straightaways.

In addition to the optional “R” tune for the supercharger, Shelby American will offer a solid blue painted hood stripes as well as finished rear bumper stripes. A Watts link rear suspension, upgraded stereo, track-oriented brakes and other options are also available on the Shelby.

The “SR-71″ designation holds a dual meaning for the one-of-a-kind, fully-customized Mustang. First, “SR-71″ refers to the car’s design and performance-inspired connection with the SR-71 Blackbird, the aircraft that holds all official airspeed and altitude records and is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular planes ever produced. Second, “SR” represents the first collaborative project between Shelby and Roush. Mustang Chief Designer Darrell Behmer led design for the project and Mustang Chief Nameplate Engineer Dave Pericak led the engineering effort. Ford Racing Performance Parts were also added to further enhance the exclusivity of the car. The sale of the SR-71 “Blackbird” will highlight an evening of festivities at the EAA Gathering of Eagles July 29 during AirVenture.

The group that will directly benefit from the auction proceeds is EAA’s Young Eagles, which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.5 million young people since 1992, while also teaching the value of hard work, personal responsibility and enhanced math and science skills. “Ford Motor Company’s historic tie to aviation is no better represented than by the company’s commitment as a continued partner of EAA and AirVenture, a celebration of flight here in Oshkosh that is unmatched anywhere else in the world,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA chairman and president.

In 2008, Ford’s inaugural vehicle specially-built in support of the Young Eagles, the one-of-a-kind Mustang AV8R, raised a record $500,000 for the charity. “The excitement around the 2008 AV8R, our first one-off Mustang ever produced, inspired us to push for another, first, the collaboration of Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush,” said Edsel B Ford II, a member of Ford’s Board of Directors. “This year’s SR-71 Blackbird is a special tribute to Ford’s lineage of performance vehicles, as well as to the promising innovators of EAA’s Young Eagles.” Ford vehicles sold at auction during past EAA AirVenture events have collectively raised more than $1 million to support the Young Eagles.

The Mustang SR-71 “Blackbird” is Build #1 of 1 and presents a truly unique opportunity for collectors. The vehicle is based on a 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 with the glass roof option. Ford Racing performance modifications (Supercharger, Handling Pack, tuned exhaust, and exhaust tips) generate 100 additional horsepower from the all-aluminum 5.0L 32-valve V8 engine. The special racing Handling Pack optimizes the performance experience and lowers the ride height by 1-inch.

From there, the car takes on a design personality similar to that of the original SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. The Mustang’s stunning design theme includes black and gray matte exterior paint with harmonious SR-71 themed graphic treatment, performance wheels, front and rear fascias and an integrated spoiler/wing to reflect the car’s connection with its namesake aircraft, which made its inaugural flight in 1964, the year the first Ford Mustang came off the line. The “Blackbird” nickname is reflected in the car’s exterior paint treatment, complete with markings from the liquids which leaked and streaked until the plane came up to speed. A unique screen print glass roof design and exterior artwork reflect the unbridled spirit of the Ford Design team.

The interior cockpit will seat only two and includes a roll-cage, racing seats and fire extinguisher, The signatures of Jack Roush and Carroll Shelby are embroidered into the seats, and special gauges and instrument cluster graphics have been added.

Enhancing the value and allure of the vehicle, the Mustang SR-71 “Blackbird” will feature an appliqué autograph area capturing Roush and Shelby’s signatures and badging to further reinforce the uniqueness of the car. The vehicle will be on display at the Ford Hangar at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh beginning July 26.

SHELBY GT500CR PROTOTYPE MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE IN VEGAS

Classic Recreations 1967 G.T.500CR makes first public appearance in Las Vegas the same weekend as the NASCAR Shelby American Race

Yukon, Okla. (Feb 25th, 2010) - Less than four months after custom coachbuilder Classic Recreations announced the Officially-Licensed 1967 Shelby G.T.500CR continuation car program at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the first prototype made its debut in the same city but with a very different setting.

Details of the reborn supercar have been a closely guarded secret, but on February 25th, 2010, the first GT500CR prototype was photographed near the Shelby American facility in Las Vegas, prior to an all-Shelby weekend where car owners and NASCAR fans gathered to celebrate the legendary mark during the NASCAR Shelby American GT350 stock car race.

The G.T.500CR is the first official 1967 Shelby Mustang continuation car ever built, and each hand-built vehicle features a 427 cubic inch (7.0L) engine, model specific bodywork, custom paint and hand-stitched upholstery.
Every has an official Shelby serial number, badges and will be included in the Shelby World Registry. The prototype that appeared in Las Vegas is the 545 horsepower Performance Model, featuring a fuel injected, naturally aspirated engine, modern coil-over suspension with rack-and-pinion steering and more.

Reproduced on the last page of Mike Shoen’s book, The Cobra-Ferrari Wars, is a hand-annotated typewritten page listing just 42 “Cars Built to Racing Specification.” A legend was built on the successes of those few cars.

Nearly a half century after the first of them was built and more than four decades after the last of them left AC in Thames Ditton and Shelby’s Los Angeles shop, this legend still inspires the admiration and respect that makes the name “Cobra” recognized worldwide. And while many legends are embellished with the passing of time, the Cobra’s iconic status is based on solid fact: the success of a few passionate guys who bested the established powers in U.S. and international road racing on the strength of their ingenuity, persistence, creativity and drive.

Of those 42 “Cars Built to Racing Specifications,” only 29 enjoyed the distinction of being factory team cars, part of Shelby’s continuous efforts from the very first Cobra to discover the weaknesses of the combination of the AC Ace chassis and body with Ford’s lightweight cast iron 260 and 289 cubic inch V8 engines. As shortcomings surfaced – which they did from the very first Cobra built – they were corrected in the next series of team Cobras, then combined with the latest thinking in performance equipment, engine tuning and tires to discover a new round of improvements to be incorporated in the next series of team cars.

A compact organization, with short lines of communication between Shelby in California and AC in England, the changes developed in competition were quickly incorporated in production Cobras, making it easy for the two factories and private owners to convert production cars to competition. It was the sort of continuous improvement that took decades for major carmakers to adopt. It was second nature to Shelby’s competition-focused crew and essential to realize the Cobra’s potential.

It also meant that the later cars were always better than their predecessors. The last of the series, the six “cutback door” 289 factory team roadsters built for the 1964-65 U.S. Road Racing Championship series, were the best of all.

The 1963-65 period saw the glorious culmination of a generation’s evolution of road racing in the years after World War II. Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Lola and Chevrolet fielded factory-backed teams to contest epic contests on purpose built road courses at Monza, Daytona, Goodwood, the Nürburgring, Bridgehampton and Montlhèry; legendary open road circuits at the Targa Florio, Rheims, Le Mans and Spa Francorchamps; the airport circuit at Sebring; and the 8-day trial that made up the Tour de France Auto.

These top marques built models that are today nearly mythical in their allure and performance – GTO, 275P, 250LM, Project 214, Lightweight E-type, Tipo 151, GTZ, 904, Grand Sport – often building specific cars adapted in engine, transmission, suspension, bodywork and even wheelbase to suit the performance characteristics of a specific course, season and race length. In just a small cluster of years in the middle of the Sixties, some of the most famous, desirable and beautiful sports racing and gran turismo automobiles ever built were created and raced.

Carroll Shelby pursued the same development track, creating a series of increasingly specific Cobras in just a few years but basing them on his own concept of marrying a lightweight but – by the standards of the day at least – large displacement American V8 engine with a proven chassis, suspension and bodywork. The concept wasn’t new. Railton had done it in England in the thirties with Hudson drivetrains. Jensen had used Ford V8s, impressing even Edsel Ford with their design, handling and performance. Sydney Allard also was a Ford guy before he adopted the overhead valve V8s from Cadillac and Chrysler.

Shelby’s opportunity arose when Bristol stopped production of its BMW-based two-liter six. AC Cars had employed it with success for extra performance in its Ace roadster, a beautiful little two-seater built on a John Tojeiro-designed chassis with four-wheel independent suspension. Originally built for AC’s ancient (designed by John Weller in 1919) single overhead camshaft two-liter six, the Bristol’s added performance made a consistent winner of the Ace in two-liter competition, and the loss of Bristol power threatened the small manufacturer with extinction. Shelby learned of Ford’s new 260 cubic inch Fairlane V8 and talked Ford out of two of them to create a Cobra proposal. It created a sensation when launched at the New York Auto Show in 1962.

Production followed swiftly, if in small quantities, as did competition. In October 1962 at Riverside, the first steps in Cobra development were undertaken after the car, driven by Bill Krause, failed to finish when a rear hub failed. The first Cobra race win was notched only three months later, also at Riverside, in the hands of Dave MacDonald. As unlikely as it sounded, Shelby set his sights on an FIA Manufacturers Championship and a parade of ever stronger, better handling, more reliable and faster Cobras began to pass through the roster of the Shelby team.

Cobra historians (and for this we defer to the 4th edition “World Registry of Cobras and GT40s”) group the factory team cars into just seven clusters, which culminate in the 1964-65 USRRC Roadsters of which the example offered here, CSX 2557, is one. Specifications merged, consistent with constant evolution in 1963, but the evolution became clearer as the march to the 1965 Manufacturers Championship gathered momentum. The transverse leaf spring independent suspension chassis John Tojeiro designed for the two-liter AC engine in 1953 grew stronger, and its handling and steering became more predictable and setup more flexible to meet the demands of the widely varying circuits and conditions on U.S. road courses, as well as the diverse demands of the FIA’s international schedule.

Engines were based on standard “K-Code” Mustang 289/271 hp powerplants with race prepared lower ends, ported and polished heads with big valves, Cobra intakes with a quartet of Weber downdraft carbs, headers, side outlet exhausts, big oil sumps with baffles and anti-surge doors and oil coolers. The cars got oversize fuel tanks with “Monza” quick release fuel filler caps, Koni shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, stiffened springs, Halibrand center lock magnesium wheels, oversize brakes, brake cooling, differential oil coolers, wider wheels and tires and many more modifications for performance and reliability.

The performance of the little Ford V8 soon overpowered the standard racing tires, and Shelby, with Ford’s support, looked for better rubber. As much as Ford was battling Ferrari and Jaguar for dominance on the track, Goodyear and Firestone were locked in a desperate struggle for supremacy in the “round, black things” that put it all to work. Shelby found its solution first in the “Stock Car Specials” Goodyear built for NASCAR, getting the winged foot technicians to cut a shallow blocky tread pattern on the NASCAR slicks (that soon became slick in competition) that locked the Ford engine’s generous torque to the pavement.

Eventually bigger tires required wider wheels, and by the 1964 FIA season, the narrow AC-derived 289 Cobra body no longer could claim to encompass them within even the most aggressive tacked on flares. The wide hips that would later come to characterize 427-powered Cobras made their debut on a series of 1964 FIA Cobras, and even they were barely able to shelter the 8 ½-inch wide Halibrands and their beefy rubber. The exaggerated rear fenders extended into the door area, which necessitated reshaping the doors to a radically radiused rear edge and inspired the moniker “cutback doors” that has come to characterize these cars, nearly the ultimate in small block competition Cobra development.

The voluptuous fenders, huge air intakes, big wheels and tires foreshadowed the new Cobra II, the 427-powered coil spring suspension Cobras that would soon supplant the first generation. Combining the aggressive appearance of the later 427s with the lighter weight, more responsive chassis and better balance of the small block Cobras, the cutback door Cobras set a standard for aggressive appearance with performance to match which still inspires admiration.

Later in 1964, Shelby completed a series of the ultimate competition 289 Cobras. Essentially constructed to FIA specs with wide rear fenders and cutback doors, they are known as the USRRC cars and were built with minor differences specifically to the rules of the U.S. Road Racing Championship. In addition to their USRRC-specific equipment, they incorporate everything Shelby had learned in three years of intense competition with the world’s most experienced and accomplished marques.

CSX 2557, offered here, is one of those six 1964 USRRC cars. One of only two of the USRRC Cobras completed with dual side pipes on each side of the car, it was entered in the season-ending FIA race, the Bridgehampton Double 500 in September 1964. Driven there by Charlie Hayes, it failed to finish when a carburetor drain plug worked loose, dumping its fuel on the track and emptying the tank on lap 48 of the 110-lap race. Thereafter, it was retained by Shelby American as a spare until it was sold in April 1966 to Richard Roe, who raced it in SCCA A/Production during 1966 and then sold it to Murray Kellner in Locanto, Florida, who continued its U.S. racing although with unknown results. Its subsequent history is known and documented in the “SAAC World Registry.”

It was restored to its original Shelby team appearance in Guardsman Blue with White Le Mans stripes in the mid-90s.

One of the most original and unmolested of all the famed Shelby Cobra 289 race cars, CSX 2557 is in exceptional, meticulously maintained condition today, an example that exhibits nearly a half century’s careful preservation, restoration, maintenance and enjoyment. Its history is clear and unblemished by mishap, disappearance or accident.

It was sampled briefly by an RM representative following its catalog photography on a chilly January day in New England. Starting smartly after two pumps on the accelerator and a touch of the key-actuated starter, it settled smoothly into a stable idle. The clutch engaged gently and the engine burbled happily at low rpm, a car anyone accustomed to driving a stick shift Mustang could accommodate easily.

Off idle, its vastly over-carbureted engine fussed and objected until it warmed up but then displayed a willingness to rev that invited a detour onto the nearby stretch of Interstate 95, unfortunately deterred by the lack of license plates (and its custodian’s concern). The gearbox (described by Le Mans-winner Paul Frere in Michael Shoen’s The Cobra-Ferrari Wars as “finger-light” and “takes no effort”) is a delight. The unassisted brakes pull up with reasonable effort, straight and true even when cold. The unusual four-branch side exhaust system has its own distinctive gobble-gobble beat at idle, and the torque of the 289, even with big valves, headers, a cam and plenty of carburetion, comes on strongly at low rpm, easily exceeding the old, cold 7.00-15 Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Specials’ grip on cold pavement.

Unlike many old race cars, it’s easy to drive gently and encourages experimentation with its limits.

Riding in real Halibrands with seating for two, exhilarating performance and modern safety precautions including an onboard fire system, this is the epitome of mid-sixties GT race car technology. Stable in the hands of a competent driver, its potential in the hands of Shelby team drivers like Bob Bondurant, Allen Grant, Dick Thompson, Ronnie Bucknum, Phil Hill or Dan Gurney is apparent. A pair of star cracks in the paint from stones thrown up from the tires attest to its enthusiastic use; its presentation is that of a team car after practice and before the start of the Bridgehampton Double 500.

By all accounts, it is the next-to-last Team Cobra built, the culmination of three years of intensive development, testing and racing in the most demanding international competition that would bring Shelby the 1965 FIA Manufacturers Championship.

Best of all, it’s good enough to show – but not too good to drive.

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 8, 2010 – Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) engineers are taking high performance to a new level with the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, resulting in a car that has an all-new aluminum-block engine, even better driving dynamics and handling, improved fuel economy and more horsepower than ever.

“The SVT team continues to push the performance standards of the Shelby to even higher levels and better refinement,” said Jost Capito, director of global performance vehicles and motorsports business development. “All the changes we made reflect a desire for even better handling and outstanding driving dynamics – from weight savings to improved balance.”

Weight savings, new technology headline all-new aluminum engine
The 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by an all-new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, which produces 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque, a 10 horsepower increase versus the 2010 model. The engine also is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivering a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel economy, acceleration, handling and steering precision.

“Cutting weight to improve performance is a tradition among hot rodders,” said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. “It might not be as sexy as adding more horsepower or bigger brakes, but shaving pounds off of a car is the single smartest move you can make.”

The new engine uses state-of-the-art Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) liner coating, a process that applies a 150-micron composite coating that contains nanoparticles on the internal surfaces of engine cylinder bores, replacing cast-iron liners typically used in aluminum engine blocks. The Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation honored the inventors of the Ford-patented PTWA technology with the 2009 National Inventor of the Year Award.

This is the first Ford application of the technology, and it offers improved overall performance and durability, along with functional benefits of reduced friction between piston rings and cylinder bores, improved heat transfer due to increased surface contact area and a weight savings of 8.5 pounds compared to a typical steel-sleeved aluminum block. A mechanical roughening process provides higher material adhesion for the spray coating.

The PTWA process uses air and electricity to create a plasma jet of 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which melts a steel wire that is fed into a rotating spray gun. Using atomized air, the melted steel wire is blown into a specially machined surface of the aluminum-block engine cylinder bore. In the process of melting and applying the metal to the surface, the steel wire oxidizes, creating a composite coating consisting of both iron and iron oxide.

“Ford’s Global Research and Advanced Engineering looks to all industries for advanced technologies – and this comes from aerospace. It’s the same technology you would find on aircraft engines,” said Glenn Jorgensen, SVT powertrain team leader. “We’ve invented a coating as a replacement for cast iron that delivers improvements in power and performance and fuel economy.”

The new engine also has its roots in the iconic Ford GT. The new 5.4-liter engine is an evolution of the GT engine, with improved block structure through the use of a unique bulkhead chilled process and six-bolt billet main bearing caps. This new advanced engine will exceed Ford GT performance with its traditional supercharger technology.

“The Ford GT has solidified itself as one of the world’s most coveted supercars. To make improvements to the engine from this supercar and make it available in a Mustang is impressive,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT global performance vehicle chief functional engineer. “The aluminum-block engine is robust and strong enough to produce the performance numbers and durability our customers demand.”

Increased power and increased fuel economy
The 2011 Shelby GT500 combines power and fuel economy into one impressive package. This 2011 Shelby GT500 will be the first modern Shelby without the gas guzzler tax, thanks to the EPA-projected 23 mpg highway and 15 mpg city it will deliver. This is up from 22 mpg highway and 14 mpg city for the 2010 model.

The 5.4-liter V-8 achieves 80 percent of its torque between 1,750 and 6,250 rpm, giving the car a higher level of performance feel. A larger two-row intercooler for the supercharger system has 40 percent more cooling capacity, helping to make power more consistent in higher ambient conditions.

Fuel economy gains come from the new 102-pound-lighter aluminum-block engine, EPAS and detailed aerodynamic changes to the underside of the vehicle.

Dramatic performance upgrades
New for 2011 is an SVT Performance Package for enthusiasts who want even more performance out of their Shelby GT500 for racetrack-ready driving dynamics. Complete with all-new Goodyear Eagle® F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires that SVT engineers worked directly with Goodyear to develop, the car is ready to race. The tires offer superb dry traction and precise handling, complete with a race-inspired high-performance tread compound.

The optional package also offers unique styling, lighter wheels, a higher rear axle ratio and stiffer springs, and it is available on both the convertible and coupe. Data show the 2011 coupe with the SVT Performance Package is 3.0 seconds faster per lap than the 2010 Shelby GT500 on a 2.3-mile test track.

Carried over from 2010, the 2011 Shelby GT500 features AdvanceTrac®, Ford’s stability control system with several options for performance. Calibration of the system for the 2011 Shelby has been uniquely tailored to each vehicle configuration (base or optional) to optimize the performance.

SVT has worked very hard to make EPAS better than the outgoing hydraulic steering system. The addition of EPAS makes for a dramatic contribution to Shelby GT500 driving dynamics, with improved torque build-up and road feel that delivers quicker and more precise steering, increased effort on the racetrack or winding roads, and reduced effort in low-speed parking maneuvers.

Slotted brake dust shields were added to improve brake cooling and handling, and a new pedal box improves clutch and pedal efforts even more. A lowered ride height of 11 millimeters in front and 8 millimeters at the rear provides a sportier attitude and improved handling.

More engine sound, less road noise
For 2011, Shelby GT500 also benefits from NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) improvements. Overall road noise is reduced by 20 percent versus the 2010 Shelby. Actions undertaken to achieve this improvement include additional sound-deadening material on either side of the instrument panel, additional sound absorption behind interior trim panels, and a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces – all resulting in the driver hearing more exhaust and engine sound and less road and air noise.

The Shelby GT500 convertible model features enhanced structural rigidity, with lateral stiffness improved by 12 percent versus the 2010 model. The V-brace has been stiffened by adding gussets. The secondary crossmember also has been stiffened, while a front Z-brace has been added, connecting primary and secondary crossmembers. A-pillar stiffening foam has been added to increase rigidity.

The structural improvements to the convertible gave SVT the opportunity to be more sport-oriented in the chassis tuning, without trading comfort. Along with the chassis and structural improvements, the 2011 model also will get standard 19-inch aluminum wheels.

“One of the biggest changes for this Shelby is that the convertible acts and feels like a coupe,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief nameplate engineer. “Before, they had a very different character, and the convertible is taking a big step in the sportiness and handling precision area, without degrading the ride.”

GT500 gets a new exhaust for 2011, roaring with an even more aggressive sound than the 2010 model. The 2.75-inch exhaust with all-new tuning helped to deliver the additional 10 horsepower.

Added convenience content
New for 2011 is an optional glass roof, providing customers with a less expensive option than a convertible and without compromising the coupe’s versatility, headroom or climate-controlled environment.

The specially formulated glass also protects interior fabric material from solar radiation deterioration and discoloration by reducing solar light transmittance. To help improve acoustics and interior quietness, the glass features a layer of vinyl that reduces noise, vibration and harshness.

Each GT350 will be clad in traditional white with Shelby Guardsman blue Le Mans stripes and feature the new Ford V8 coupled to a 6 speed manual transmission and center exit exhaust. Blue Shelby GT350 valve covers and billet caps set off the supercharged engine. The Baer brake system features 6 piston kit in the front, as well as 14″ ERADISPEED rotors in the rear with cooling ducts for all four corners.

The suspension was upgraded with new Ford Racing springs, struts, sway bars and adjustable caster/camber plates. The car also receives a new front fascia, tail light trim, front splitter, rear deck lid filler panel and rear fascia. Functional scoops are located on the side rockers and hood. GT350 badges on the outside and inside include a Shelby serial number. The A pillar carries a fuel pressure, oil pressure and boost gauge.

The Shelby GT350 is a post title program; a customer purchases a car from their local Ford Dealer, which is turned into a GT350 by the Shelby American Team. A limited number will be built in the 2011 model year. A Ford Mustang GT can be dropped shipped by a Ford dealer to Shelby’s Las Vegas facility for conversion or a customer can arrange to have a properly specified car transported to the factory. The Shelby GT350 up-fit completed by Shelby American has a MSRP of $33,995 and does not include the price of the base car.

The other issue is that this configuration would really only work if the intake and exhaust flow were reversed, putting the exhaust in the valley. Without this change, the paths from the exhaust ports to the turbos would be too long, resulting in excess turbo lag and unacceptable performance. However, this would require a level of engineering investment for new heads that Ford is unlikely to make in such a low-volume program. Thus, we’ll have to be satisfied with the aluminum block 5.4 that is arriving later this year.
