The First 9-seconds 2010 Shelby GT500

Another great night at the track. The Lethal Performance 2010 GT500 made its way deeper into the 9′s cracking off a 9.66@146.19mph. The weather was in the 60′s with a little bit of moisture in the air. Jeremy Martorella of UPR Products pulled the car up to the line for our first run of the evening. With the 2 step set at 2100 he made the launch. First gear looked awesome and so did the 1-2 shift.. However after the shift the car broke loose and started going sideways but Jeremy’s professional race experience got the car back in the groove and down the rest of the track shifting as fast as an automatic could. As he passes the traps the board lit up with a 9.66@146.19mph. The car ran 114.14mph through the 1/8th. This is still using a 4″ pulley on the 4.0L Whipple which produces 21.5psi. We were using C16 with no methanol and this is blower only. We’re going to continue working on the suspension and once it’s dialed in we’ll turn up the boost. Our goal is to make an 8 second pass with the 6 speed making it the first GT500 in the 8′s with a manual transmission.

No Twin-Turbo 5.0L For Shelby GT500

In recent months, rumors have been rampant that the next generation of Ford’s Shelby GT500 Mustang would dump the existing 5.4-liter supercharged V8 in favor of a twin-turbo version of the new 5.0-liter Coyote V8 that debuts this spring. Unfortunately, in spite of earlier reports confirming the development, it appears that such an engine will not be installed in the GT500 any time soon. Mike Harrison, Ford’s chief engineer for the 5.0-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines made it clear that the mooted engine is not part of the program for the Blue Oval bomber.Harrison explained that such a configuration would be almost impossible for Ford to engineer because the 5.0-liter already consumes virtually the entire engine compartment. There is evidently no room to mount the turbos on the outside of the block where the exhaust currently resides. One possibility would be to put the turbos in the valley of the block similar to the new 6.7-liter diesel or BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, but this creates a bunch of new problems as well. The heat generated by having the turbos up top would probably cause the paint on the hood to bubble and peel unless Ford could add some exotic and undoubtedly expensive heat shielding, which is unlikely to happen.

The other issue is that this configuration would really only work if the intake and exhaust flow were reversed, putting the exhaust in the valley. Without this change, the paths from the exhaust ports to the turbos would be too long, resulting in excess turbo lag and unacceptable performance. However, this would require a level of engineering investment for new heads that Ford is unlikely to make in such a low-volume program. Thus, we’ll have to be satisfied with the aluminum block 5.4 that is arriving later this year.

Shelby GT500CR Mustang by Classic Recreations

Classic Recreations has just released some preliminary technical details and specifications for the GT 500 CR. All three GT 500 CR models will feature a hand-built 7.0L engine, model specific bodywork, custom paint and hand-stitched upholstery. Every car should be marked with an official Shelby serial number, badges and will be included in the official Shelby Worldwide Registry.

The “Intro” model is powered by a 545hp fuel injected 7.0 L engine, built by Classic Recreations using top-shelf performance parts and Mass Flo digital fuel injection. A 150hp NOS provides extra power. Suspension and power rack and pinion steering modernize the car’s handling, and a 5 speed manual transmission sends the power to the 17×8″ Shelby wheels over front and rear cross drilled Shelby/Baer brakes. Inside some of the extras are a custom stereo, climate control and Carroll Shelby Signature seats, gauges, console, and floormats. The exterior is available in five different color schemes and features authentic Shelby Performance parts, such as lights, emblems and a real Shelby Le Mans racing gas cap.The “Performance” model has all the features of the “Intro”, including the 150hp NOS, rack and pinion steering and 160mph speedometer, plus Carroll Shelby Scat Rally series 1000 seats, larger 17×9.5 rear wheels and a Total Control front and rear coilover suspension system for modern sports car handling.

The “Venom” maintains the authentic Shelby look of the “Intro” and “Performance” models, but boosts horsepower to 780hp with an F1-R Intercooled ProCharger supercharged engine. The interior consists of a 200 mph speedometer and racing-style bucket seats. The “Venom” also boasts suspension and chassis upgrades as well as 17×11″ rear wheels and wider ultra high performance Goodyear tires. Model line specifications and details are subject to change.
