Start under the hood: That’s a Gessford Machine (Hastings, NE) built, 100% new, all aluminum FE 427 with a Paxton NOVI 1200 blower hanging off the side. Gessford not only builds huge horsepower motors they’re licensed by Shelby and their motors receive CSX numbers upon completion. You want a real Shelby mill? Gessford can build you one from stock to insane, which is about the end of the spectrum where this beast lies. The foundation is a Shelby aluminum block, stuffed with a Shelby billet crank, H beam connecting rods and low compression (for the boost) forged pistons. The heads are Shelby pieces as well, styled after the “medium riser” Ford pieces but with larger 2.25/1.75 valves and more efficient ports. Up front, you’ll find a Shelby cast aluminum timing cover and water pump while a single plane Shelby intake resides on top. While that would be enough power for most, this isn’t a car for the masses, so Gessford added a Paxton NOVI 1200 supercharger hanging from custom billet engine brackets for even more go power. We figure the motor’s worth better than 700HP, and Gessford’s tab was north of $40,000. Supporting pieces include the MSD 6BTM ignition box and billet distributor, a set of ceramic coated headers, a mega dollar AVIAID dual kickout fabricated aluminum oil pan and Florida Central Machine spark plug wires. There’s an SFI damper up front and an SFI aluminum flywheel inside the scattershield in back. The polished blower, discharge piping and the fabricated and Shelby-logo’d valve covers handle the show duties. The headers dump into 2.’5” pipes with Magnaflow mufflers before exiting through the rockers-you have to hear this car to believe it. This is a serious sounding and running engine with few equals on the street.

The rest of the drivetrain is up to the task, with an aluminum crossflow radiator and dual fans handling the cooling, a hydraulically operated heavy duty clutch sending power to the TREMEC TKO500 transmission and a custom driveshaft leading back to a FAB9 3.70:1 9” rear axle with Strange axles and a Detroit Locker. There’s no hack job here, either-Exotic Concepts in Longwood, Florida, did the work. Sure, some cars look the part, and some even have huge engines, but how many do you see with ALL of the proper supporting equipment?

Stay underneath and see the chassis is all there, too. An ABS master cylinder with electrically operated Hydroboost powers Wilwood four piston calipers with two piece drilled rotors. There’s an adjustable proportioning valve for fine tuning and aluminum rotor hats for less unsprung weight. Total Control’s front suspension setup with coilover shocks, fabricated control arms with Heim joints, rack and pinion steering and a billet strut tower brace. Out back you’ll find a fully adjustable four link suspension with coilovers and a Panhard rod. Again, many pretenders but very few cars go this far!

The visuals are all in place, too. The already beautiful fastback body looks downright deadly in its Eleanor body kit and Super Snake bulge hood. There’s a racing style fuel filler in the C pillar, big PIAA driving lights in the gaping grille, full rocker panels with aluminum exhaust tips, hood pins, stripes and all new glass and trim. New chrome pieces from the door handles down add sparkle while the “wow” factor gets turned up to 11 with the Compomotive 17” TRUE knockoff wheels and tri-bar center caps, wrapped in Dunlop 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 HTR Z tires. The body is perfectly smooth, the work of known Shelby expert Dave Miller in Florida. All of the Shelby pieces are in place from the big snakes to the sequential taillights out back. Is there any wonder this car took down the best of show trophy in its only outing?

The cockpit is an excellent place to while away the miles, or to be a complete hooligan-the car does either with aplomb. You’re sitting in very comfortable leather racing seats and held in place with RJS camlock harnesses. Your left hand is on the Moto-Lita wood wheel with Shelby center cap (all atop a tilt column) while your right hand finds the shifter with the awesome “GO BABY GO” shift knob. Look over your right shoulder-that’s a 10lb NOS nitrous bottle hooked to the Ny-Trex wet system in the engine bay. It’s jetted for a 125HP shot, for those just-in-case moments! The center console features a new Shelby armrest pad, a custom stainless insert with power window switches, fuel pump and nitrous arming switches, and three of the Auto Meter Phantom series gauges you’ll find everywhere you look. ’67 Door panels were tapped for duty (they’re a cleaner look) with wheel center cap logos over the holes where the window cranks would normally poke through. How’s that for detailed? A four point rollbar, the nitrous bottle and a fiberglass rear seat delete ride behind you, while a fire extinguisher rides shotgun. We wouldn’t want you to be uncomfortable, either, so there’s an Old Air Products heating and air conditioning system installed. And yes, it’s as cool to be in here as you’re thinking.

Few cars get everything right, and this is one of them. We’re no stranger to customs and pro touring cars, and we can honestly tell you this beast is a standout. From ozone depleting burnouts to taking down trophies everywhere to cruising in style and comfort this car does it all!

Painted and assembled by Chris Tietge’s Hot Rod Garage in Lebanon Ohio this sweet looking Ford is the kind of car that we all dream of owning as kids and pledge to build as adults. It absolutely nails the often attempted, but rarely achieved formula of OEM quality good looks and panel fit in a highly detailed, completely custom package. The straight and smooth body is covered in a thick coat of vivid GM Torch Red and topped by an amazing custom pearl flame job courtesy of Wade Hughes from Ohio Flames. It’s an unbeatable combination on a car that is so well done you’ll find yourself walking back to it again and again just to stare and smile.

With think resin throughout and no waves or imperfections, the cars steel reinforced fiberglass body takes the classic design of a ’32 Ford roadster and adds numerous details which take it to a whole new level. At the front of the car, a pristine D.F. Metalworks stainless steel grille presents flatter and wider than a traditional ’32 Ford grille and sits between two chrome trimmed headlights with body matched housings and integrated turn signals. Behind the grille, the traditional looking ’32 Ford hood has been extended to better accommodate massive powerplants and gives the car that cool ‘long and low’ look that emphasizes power. Behind the hood, a modern wrap around windshield trades in the distracting hard edged look of traditional chopped and stainless framed windshields for a smooth custom look that emphasizes the cars clean design. Below that windshield, shaved suicide doors carry modern body matched sport mirrors and fit perfectly, opening with ease and closing with a confident ‘thunk’. Below the doors, custom fiberglass fenders flow from the car’s front frame horns to the bottom of the rear valence giving the traditional roadster body some nice modern curves. Out back, a custom tan top that was fabricated by Tietge’s Hot Rod Shop sits above a thin LED tail light that spans the entire width of the cars smooth rear valence. Below the trunk, a completely retractable license plate hangs just above the ground in front of a finned rear end cover and chrome inboard mounted brakes.

Pry open the long hood and you’ll find a fully chromed GM Performance Parts Ram Jet 502 that takes up the car’s entire Torch Red engine bay. Straight from GM, this killer package includes high efficiency aluminum heads, an aluminum intake, forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods, a forged steel crank, a hydraulic roller cam, a fully calibrated ECM, electronic fuel injection and a stout 9.6 to 1 compression ratio that creates 510 horsepower and 565 lb./ft. of unmatched throttle response. Lighting fires for that massive engine is a new American Autowire harness that sends power through a GM coil and distributor to red high performance Taylor plug wires. At the front of the motor a reusable air filter hangs above a Vintage Air Front Runner serpentine system that clears the cars radiator mounted electric fan by about an inch, perfectly displaying the laser precision executed throughout this build. Aesthetically, the car has been completely finished for show with all of its ancillary components like the chrome alternator, chrome AC compressor, polished valve covers, coated long-tube headers and braided hoses still looking brilliant and the simple and uncluttered engine bay appearing more like industrial sculpture than a functioning automobile.

The cars custom-built frame was supplied by Boyd Coddington and consists of a heavily tapered chassis that is reinforced by tubular cross members. A polished Heidt’s style front suspension features stainless steel upper and lower control arms, chrome QA1 coil-over shocks, a Flaming River manual steering rack and Wilwood performance brakes with drilled rotors and chrome calipers. The cars polished Corvette inspired independent rear suspension features inboard Wilwood disc brakes with polished calipers, two more polished QA1 coil overs and a cool finned differential cover. Exhaust is handled by a custom fabricated and completely polished oval exhaust system that includes stainless Hushpower mufflers, and a 6-speed manual transmission that was transplanted from an LT4 Corvette provides motivation via a body matched driveshaft and pavement shredding 3.73 gears. Everything under this car has been painted in brilliant Torch Red and, as with the engine bay, all componentry has been upfitted to show standards with polished brake and fuel lines, new braided hoses and a custom fuel tank rounding out the details. At the corners of the car, 16 inch front and 18 inch rear Boyd Coddington wheels wear 205/50 and 255/45 Z-rated Goodyear radials.

You can credit Steve Holcomb at Pro Auto Custom Interiors for this roadster’s stunning, show-stopping interior. Covered in high quality cream leather, the bucket seats were custom fabricated just for this car and the overall design is simple and effective. At the floor, a custom cream console flows from the dash to the middle of the seats and houses a GM 6-speed shifter, controls for the cars Vintage Air HVAC system and buttons for the power windows. At the sides of the seats, custom cream door panels flow around great looking billet door handles, and at the bottom of the seats high-end tan wool carpeting sits below chrome pedals and thick tan mats. In front of the driver, a painted tilt steering column is topped by a custom Boyd Coddington steering wheel, and the painted dash is equipped with a Billet Specialties aluminum panel that holds reliable Classic Instruments gauges. Behind the cockpit you’ll find a fully finished trunk that perfectly matches the cream interior and hides a Secret Audio AM/FM radio.

Betancourt, 49, suffered a serious heart problem 11 years ago, and he credits the doctors at Henry Ford with saving his life.

“I went to the doctor thinking I had a bad cold and the specialists at Henry Ford told me I had what is called an aortic dissection – a tear in the major blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the body,” recalled Betancourt. “As a result, my aorta had grown to the size of a softball, and I needed immediate open-heart surgery.”

“The doctors said I could have been straining myself and the aorta could have just popped, or I could have just gone to sleep and never woke up,” explained Betancourt.

The high-risk surgery that Betancourt needed to repair his damaged aorta was performed successfully by cardiovascular surgeons at Henry Ford Hospital.

“There are gifted people out there who have been given the ability to do what they do,” said Betancourt. “I’m here because of them.”

Betancourt says creating the distinctive Mustang for auction at the “Get Your Heart Racing” event – which will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Ford Motor Company – is his way of using the gifts he’s been given to give something back to the doctors and staff at Henry Ford.

“We’re all here for a purpose, and maybe my purpose is to help people through my skills,” said Betancourt. “One of the things I do very well is vehicle customization – taking a car that already exists and enhancing it to make it a one-of-a-kind vehicle.”

2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca: One of a kind
Betancourt says his goal in customizing the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca was to create a vehicle that would attract the highest bids from car collectors and ultimately the most money for heart research and education at Henry Ford Health System.

“Everybody knows the School Bus Yellow Boss 302 that Parnelli Jones drove to victory in the 1970 Trans-Am Championship, so we decided to pay homage to that vehicle and do a modern version of the 1970 Mustang that he drove,” said Betancourt.

The 2012 Boss 302 was painted the iconic yellow color at the AutoAlliance International (AAI) plant in Flat Rock, Mich., where all of Ford’s Mustangs are built.

“The fact that the car was built and painted at the AAI plant gives it more credibility as a one-off Ford vehicle,” explained Betancourt.

Instead of using decals like they did in 1970, Betancourt painted all of the black Laguna Seca graphics on the car, which include “hockey-stick” stripes along the sides, Parnelli Jones’ No. 15 on the doors and Jones’ name on the side rails.

“I approached the project from a car collector’s perspective,” said Betancourt. “I asked myself what would happen if they took me from today, put me back in 1970 and asked me to design a car for Parnelli Jones.”

Parnelli Jones will sign the car at the “Get Your Heart Racing” event, enhancing its value even more as a collector’s item.

“Get Your Heart Racing” to fight heart disease
Ford Motor Company and Henry Ford Health System are teaming up to fight heart disease by presenting the “Get Your Heart Racing” benefit on Saturday, Oct. 15, on Ford grounds in Dearborn.

The benefit takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Ford test track at the Dearborn Development Center – rarely open to the public – and continues into the evening with the Winner’s Circle Afterglow from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ford Conference & Events Center with dinner and entertainment, as well as live and silent auctions.

Tanner Foust, host of Top Gear on the History Channel and an award-winning professional driver – including three X Games gold medals and two Formula Drift national championships – will drive three guests chosen in a drawing on the Ford test track.

Parnelli Jones, winner of dozens of races over more than two decades including the Indianapolis 500, will attend the Winner’s Circle Afterglow. Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally also will be on hand to welcome guests.

The highlight of the evening will be the live auction of a one-of-one 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca, designed especially for the event by Ford Designer Melvin Betancourt and signed by Parnelli Jones. It is a modern version of the 1970 Boss 302 that Jones drove to victory in the 1970 Trans-Am race.

Live auction items also include two tickets to the 2012 American Idol finale in April. Hotel and airfare are included. Other items are a Ford Championship Weekend VIP Experience in November, including three races, meeting Ford drivers and a personal garage and pit tour.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and the Center for Cardiac Care at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

Design-World Company in Sundern which incidentally is responsible for modeling station of CarFilmComponents (CFC-Styling Station) for more than six years, gave the originally equipped, a free-living prairie 412 hp engine an additional power impetus. Now the engine has 435 hp with a 5-liter capacity. V8 with 6 speed manual transmission of 2011 model year is fully equipped, including Shaker 1000 CD/MP3 sound system. The above mentioned increase in the capacity is achieved by open air filter with air box (Airbox), as well as software optimization.

For the beginning – the varnishing, including grinding of the plastic parts that were not varnished, such as channel bar, diffuser, radiator and bumper. The black painting of the Mustang GT remained unchanged. The foil finish with contrasting color nuances in metallic black, metallic orange, white, and the carbon foil (CFC-Black-metallic, CFC-Orange-metallic, CFC-White, as well as CFC-Carbon-Strukturfolie-Black): Who can imagine this free animal in a fast gallop? Without the use of fantasy.
The total cost of the reconstruction of the “CFC-Sundern Mustang Project” is 12.150,00 euro.

Based on the M-Sport WRC Fiesta rally car, Block plans to use the H.F.H.V. Fiesta for his North American competition – ranging from stage rally events to Gymkhana to rallycross and X Games.

Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20 – rain or shine – the annual Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day classic car event. About 1.5 million visitors and 40,000 antique and classic cars from all over the country are expected to visit the Dream Cruise, which stretches from suburban Detroit north to Pontiac in a celebration of all things automotive.

The Ford display will be located at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and 9 Mile Road in Ferndale, just north of Detroit city limits. Once again, 9 Mile Road will be turned into Mustang Alley. More than 700 classic Mustangs and other Ford-built muscle cars are registered for a classic car show. If the weather cooperates and all cars arrive as scheduled, this year’s event is expected to feature at least one of every type of Mustang model made since the car debuted in April 1964. Read more!

The full Mustang line will be on display, including 2012 examples of the 550-horsepower Shelby GT500, both street and racing versions of the Boss 302, and the Mustang GT and V6 Coupe with performance package. With its reborn 5.0-liter V8 packing 412 horsepower, powerful brakes, six-speed transmission and class-exclusive electric power steering, the Mustang GT remains one of America’s best performance car values.

The Dream Cruise will also offer spectators a close-up look at the next-generation 2012 Focus ST, the performance version of the all-new Focus five-door that features a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine making an estimated 247 horsepower, a six-speed manual transmission and race-tuned suspension. The eagerly awaited Focus ST, due next spring, will be the first high-performance compact Ford has offered in the United States since 2004.

Other performance Fords on display include SuperCab and SuperCrew versions of the hot-selling SVT Raptor off-road pickup, a Ford GT supercar and a selection of Shelby Mustangs from 1965 to the present in the Shelby “Snake Pit.”

Ford Racing engines
Mustang Alley is the place to be for Ford performance enthusiasts who are building their Ford-powered street rods and race cars. Ford Racing will have a large display of street and strip crate engines at Mustang Alley. A cadre of Ford Racing technicians and engineers staffing the display will be available to meet with the public and answer detailed technical questions about performance, installations, tuning and other topics.

Also, a new Ford crate engine makes its debut at the Dream Cruise. It’s a stroked 363-cubic-inch pushrod V8 based on the classic 302-cubic-inch engine that has powered millions of Mustangs over the years.

Ford Racing engineers will also stage test runs of the new 5.0-liter V8 Mustang GT engine, which is mounted on a run stand.

High-performance parts installed
Mustang Garage on 9 Mile Road is again open for business during the Woodward Dream Cruise. Owners of Mustangs built from 2005 to 2012 can drive in and have Ford Racing technicians install high-performance parts, including axle-back exhaust systems, short-throw shifters and suspension packages, while they wait.

Jost Capito, Ford director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development, and Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer, will also be on site at Mustang Alley on Saturday to meet with visitors. Here is the event flyer!

Prior to traveling to Scottsdale, this unique and highly collectible example of GAS’ craftsmanship will debut to the public at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas, where it will be on display September 22-24, 2011. The car will make a number of appearances at car shows and events across the country, including SEMA 2011, leading up to its auction in Scottsdale this January.

GAS hand fabricated an all-metal wide-body that stretches the vehicle nine inches wider than a stock Mustang. To complement the vehicle’s aggressive stance and design which was inspired by the Mustang BOSS 429, a Ford Racing supercharger boosts engine performance to more than 700HP. Forgiato 22×14 rear and 21×11 front three-piece GTR wheels were mated to 335/25/22 and 295/25/21 Pirelli tires to fit to the new body. Inside, custom red suede and black leather trim and upholstery with suede headliner were added to enhance the interior. The Mustang also features a Bassani Performance exhaust system, custom formulated PPG paint, a 1000-watt JL Audio system and many other unique items that make this Mustang one-of-a-kind. Read more!

All proceeds from the auction of this Mustang will go to support St. Jude, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases where no child is ever denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

Design in the details
The exterior of the 2012 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 offers a bold front fascia and six-bar billet-style bright chrome grille, and it boasts “Harley-Davidson” bright chrome badging. The truck also has a lowered appearance with a standard, fully integrated deployable running board.

Also standard are new 22-inch machined-aluminum wheels with painted accents and Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo on center cap. The paint selection is classic Harley-Davidson – Tuxedo Black and White Platinum Tri-Coat; this is the first year white has been offered.

New graphics on the bodyside of the truck are executed in a unique snakeskin texture, while “Harley-Davidson” dimensional lettering is featured on the box side. The snakeskin is inspired by tank inserts on premium-level Harley-Davidson motorcycles and also comes into play on the interior.

“This is the first time we’ve captured the full spectrum of light to dark on the exterior,” said Mike Massara, F-150 program manager. “The graphic flows and accents the design curve of the truck, yet brings the texture of the snakeskin into the vehicle, which is something that’s very difficult to do.”

Interior trim panels are covered in high-gloss Tuxedo Black paint, while the console lid and upper steering wheel carry the snakeskin leather. The scuff plate features brushed aluminum with snakeskin texture. All interior chrome surfaces feature a satin finish. Premium snakeskin leather-trimmed seats come with accent color inserts and unique cloisonné badge.

The 2012 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 interior is customized to appeal to the truck buyer who appreciates the attention to detail for which both Ford and Harley-Davidson are renowned.

Examples are the seats and the console lid featuring handmade cloisonné badges that are produced by the same company that makes badges for Harley-Davidson motorcycles; the console has limited-edition serialization plates, which include laser-engraved VIN and build numbers.

We found this perfect 1966 Stang for $69,900 on eBay and here’s the description of the listing:

Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing! On the outside, this amazing 1966 Mustang convertible looks like a clean, black ragtop with a high-quality restoration, but when you start to look a little closer you notice things like the 4-wheel disc brakes, the 17-inch Torque Thrusts, and the slightly raked ride height. Under the skin, it’s a take-no-prisoners hammer designed to pound anything with less than 500 horsepower into dust, thanks to a 600 horsepower aluminum stroker motor, a Richmond 5-speed, and a heavily fortified suspension. Best of all, it isn’t some Shelby clone with oversized fender flares that will attract all kinds of unwanted attention. No, like all the best sleepers, this one keeps a low profile until it’s time to crack the throttle. By then, you’d better be holding on tight, because all hell’s gonna break loose. The bodywork is a tribute to this car’s overall workmanship, and once you see how good the finish work is, you’ll have no doubts about the quality of the vehicle itself. No Mustang ever came out of the factory this straight, and thanks to that deep, rich paint it has movie star looks that work well with the early Mustang sheetmetal (which is 100% factory original, by the way). At first glance, you might even mistake this for a stock ragtop with an over-the-top paint job, and that just how we like it with these killer resto-mods. The doors fit beautifully, the hood and trunk offer excellent gaps, and the paint has been wet sanded and buffed to a brilliant shine. They say that nothing looks better than black when it’s done right, and this car certainly qualifies. Your knees will get weak when you see this one out in the sunlight.

All the original Mustang trim was retained as well, save for a billet grille up front. No shaved door handles, no blacked out bumpers, just beautifully restored jewelry as the Ford designers intended. It wears Hi-Po 289 badges on the front fenders, perhaps as a nod to its K-code ancestors, but it is not one of the tiny handful of real K-code convertibles built by Ford. The traditional Mustang three-element tail lights are clear and bright, the glass looks new, and even the snaps on the trim around the convertible top are brightly polished. No details were overlooked during the build of this amazing car.

Under that factory fresh sheetmetal, however, you’ll find a horse of a different breed. The engine is an all-aluminum 363 cubic inch stroker motor that cranks out in excess of 600 horsepower. With a single Holley 4-barrel and tons of raw aluminum under the hood, it looks like a full race piece that belongs in a Trans-Am vintage racer, not a street car. There’s an MSD ignition system, billet reservoir for the upgraded power steering system, and a modern serpentine drive system for the accessories, which greatly improves its high-RPM stability. A massive aluminum radiator looks ready for track duty, cooled by a heavy duty mechanical clutch fan. Stepped long-tube headers dump into a custom 3-inch exhaust system with Magnaflow mufflers and give it a snarl that’s ready for the paddock, not the local cruise-in. A new Bendix manual master cylinder feeds new lines and hoses, and all the wiring is fresh.

With that lightweight aluminum flywheel inside a Quicktime scattershield, this one loves to rev, with quick, barking snaps every time you goose the throttle. A heavy-duty hydraulic clutch connects the engine to the Richmond 5-speed I mentioned earlier, and requires a good shove on the clutch pedal to harness all that horsepower. Out back, there’s a Currie Ford 9-inch full of 4.10 gears on a Track-Lok limited slip, and it’s connected by a custom made aluminum driveshaft. If you’re thinking this sounds like a race car, you’d be exactly right. The suspension is also race-derived, with a Chassis Works coil over setup in front, QA1 shocks all around, a Total Control power rack-and-pinion system, subframe connectors, and a set of Competition Engineering Slide-A-Link traction bars mounted on the heavy-duty rear leaf springs. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised to note that the red oxide primer you see on the floors is ORIGINAL, not resprayed, which gives you an idea of how clean this car truly is. The center chassis brace has been modified to clear the 3-inch exhaust system, but otherwise the floor is untouched OEM. Cross-drilled and vented Baer disc brakes live at all four corners, with 13-inch rotors and two-piston calipers up front for steady performance under all conditions. And nothing looks better on a vintage pony than a set of charcoal Torque Thrust wheels wearing 215/45/17 front and 245/45/17 rear BFGoodrich G-Force Sport tires.

The beautifully finished interior may actually be the least radical part of the car. Using original materials and patterns throughout, the seats, carpets, and door panels are restoration pieces that would be at home at the MCA nationals. Acres of Dnyamat have been installed to keep it cool and quiet inside, which is a smart idea any time you have the interior out of a car. The original dashboard has been upgraded with a custom piece full of Auto Meter Phantom gauges, which along with the roll bar behind the seats, is the most noticeable modification. There is no console, but the 5-speed shifter proudly pokes out of the transmission tunnel and wears a leather boot and correctly-marked knob. A new LaCarrera wood-rimmed steering wheel does a great impersonation of the impossible-to-find Shelby piece, and the radio is the original AM unit with an optional 8-track player. Overhead there’s a brand new tan canvas convertible top installed by the experts at RK Motors Charlotte’s in-house upholstery shop. The trunk offers a correct trunk mat and houses the relocated Optima battery.

This is another one of those cars that were a labor of love, not a calculated investment. If you were to set out to duplicate this car yourself, you’d hit the asking price long before the chassis was complete, and you’d end up with over six figures invested once the paint was dry. And while it’s beautiful to look at, this is not a car for the guy who just wants a pleasant little Mustang to tool around in. This is a man’s car, and you’d better bring your big boy pants with you when you climb behind the wheel. That isn’t to say it is difficult to drive—far from it—but the performance will terrify you if you’ve never experienced a true 600 horsepower car before. But if you’re prepared and like the way it looks, I guarantee you’ll love the way it drives. An amazing piece for a surprisingly reasonable price.

“After the event I stayed a couple days extra to film ‘Drifting in the K.S.A’. Thanks to the kindness of the entire Al Reem Circuit team, they let me get crazy throughout the entire motorsports complex. Nothing was off-limits and I had a blast linking one track to the next through the parking lots and garages and into storage areas basically doing whatever came to mind that would be fun and challenging. Aside from drifting the entire complex, one of my most memorable parts of the whole trip was after we finished shooting and we were hot, dusty, and dead-tired, we ended up putting on a impromptu drift-day with some of the locals that came to spectate the shoot. I was teaching them how to drift, change tires, different driving techniques, and they were so pumped up. While there were no pro’s to show us the ropes back in the day, it reminded me of when I first started; that smile that stays when you link your first drift and the genuine passion to get better and conquer the challenges. I had a blast hanging out and enjoying what drifting is all about!”

First of all, the Candyapple Red over Saddle color combination is extremely rare, with fewer than 8% of 1968 Shelbys being configured in the same way. Second, it is a documented, numbers-matching car with original invoices, order sheets, and a Marti report. Finally, it IS a GT500 after all—428 cubic inches of big block Ford in a killer, race-bred package. Buy it, drive it, and watch its value stay rock-solid.

Restored by noted Mustang restorer Bob Wilson several years ago, this snake started out as an extremely clean original piece that was really straddling the line between “superior survivor” and“in need of restoration.” The ensuing restoration was done to extremely high standards and the car has been driven less than 50 miles since completion. Today it is in outstanding condition throughout, with excellent panel gaps, and gorgeous Candyapple Red paint. The fiberglass pieces on this car are high quality reproduction units, which really is a good thing since the originals often fit so poorly that no amount of rework can make them look as good as they do on this car. The GT500 stripes along the rocker panels are accurate, and you’ve probably also noticed that this is a stripe-delete car, which is very unusual. The paint is deep, rich, and lustrous, and I can’t find any evidence that this car has ever been driven on the road. If a bright red Shelby big block can be subtle and sophisticated, this is it. The trim is also show quality throughout, from the S H E L B Y block letters on the hood and deck to the polished stainless steel rocker and windshield moldings. Speaking of the windshield, it’s a correct Carlite “Sunvisor” piece with the markings in the center. The bumpers are fresh chrome, the grille surround is perfect, the hood pins are correct, and the argent silver tail panel is as-new. The trick sequential taillights are fully functional, too!

Under the hood, you’ll find a highly detailed S-code 428 cubic inch V8 painted the correct shade of Ford Blue and topped by a single 4-barrel carburetor. Factory rated at 355 horsepower, everyone pretty much acknowledges that these motors crank out substantially more than that. This one has been fully rebuilt to stock specs, then fully dressed for show duty at the highest levels. The original thermactor emissions control system is intact and functional, the hoses and clamps are correct, and there is a new Autolite battery in its tray. The original Shelby data tag is still affixed to the inner fender. This car is also loaded with luxury features like power steering and power disc brakes, as well as the Extra Cooling Package whose radiator has been restored to new condition up front. Engine bays simply do not get any nicer—this one is proverbially “eat off of it” immaculate.

Behind the engine there’s a durable numbers-matching C-6 automatic transmission that has also been rebuilt and reinstalled in the highly detailed chassis. And before you frown on automatic-equipped muscle cars, remember that automatics were often the transmission of choice for hardcore racers simply because of their consistency. In fact, this car comes with a copy of a period road test pitting a GT500 with an automatic against a 427/435 Corvette, and the editors found the GT500 incredibly potent, but a lot more civilized—which is exactly where Ford was headed when they took over Shelby’s operation. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

The rest of the chassis is exceptional—if anything, the restorer was TOO careful with his workmanship and things are TOO tidy under there. The floors are the correct red oxide primer, the finishes on the front suspension are correct, and the proper markings and paint stripes are present on things like the driveshaft and axle. The brakes are freshly rebuilt, the front end is all new, and the 3.50 geared 9-inch rear is correctly detailed with a painted housing and red oxide primer center section. Despite the Shelby’s minimal exhaust system with glasspack-style mufflers, this car is quiet and smooth, belying its dual personality.

Wheels are authentic Shelby 10-spoke alloys (with tapered spokes, not straight ones like the reproductions) with reproduction E70-15 Goodyear Speedway tires.

I’ve seen a lot of Shelbys, but very, very few with a Saddle tan interior as on this car. It’s a great change from the usual black, and really gives this car an upscale look. Again, with the Shelby and the GT500 in particular, Ford was straddling the luxury/performance fence with both available in large doses. Of course, as part of a top-flight restoration, there are fresh materials everywhere in this Décor interior. The seats, door panels, carpet and padded center console are new. The wood graining has been refinished as new, and the gauges (even the cool auxiliary gauges in the console) are freshly restored. The correct Shelby logo has been embossed in the center armrest, and the correct seat belts hang from the Shelby-only roll bar behind the front seats. You’ll also notice that this luxury-oriented snake offers a tilt steering wheel, tachometer, and an AM radio that works perfectly.

The trunk is just as good as the interior, with a matching spare, correct jack, and fresh trunk mat.

Documentation on this ’68 Shelby GT500 is substantial. There are original invoices and order sheets from Shelby Automotive, Inc. We also have an original owner’s manual, which is a stapled-together booklet that looks incredibly crude but that was what Ol’ Shel was all about—who cares about frills? There’s also a complete Marti report detailing this car’s production facts and figures. There are those reproductions of original ads that I mentioned in the beginning, and copies of articles on the GT500 from a variety of sources. This car is also registered with the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) and is listed in their registry with an ownership history.

For reasons that aren’t altogether clear to me, Shelby Mustangs are still lagging behind their Mopar and General Motors contemporaries in terms of value. If a six-figure Mustang can be considered a bargain, this one is it, because many indicators suggest that the prices of these cars will continue to go up while prices on the overheated Hemis and LS6 Chevelles have started to deflate. Nobody is surprised by this, of course, since all along most folks figured only the Shelbys were valued appropriately. Now is the time to move on this one—correct, documented, and freshly restored, its value is well established. If previous trends are any indication, this one will continue to inch its way up the value scale, making it the ideal car to invest in today. Shelby Mustang values haven’t gone crazy, there isn’t any fear of a “market correction” in their future, and transaction rates have been strong. Good Shelbys always find new homes, and this one is one of the nicer ones available today. Make a move before the market does and enjoy the stability that comes from a blue-chip investment.
