If you watched the recent Scottsdale auctions, you already know that duplicating big-name muscle cars is big business. Last year, we featured a stunning black cherry 1970 Chevelle LS5 convertible that was about the most beautifully executed clone we’d ever seen, and it sold for $75K substantial sum to a very happy enthusiast. Just two months ago, we sold a Fathom Blue LS5 Convertible tribute for $80,000.00 and we had five guys asking us when we would be getting another, while lamenting being too slow to pull the trigger.

But in reality, nothing compares to the real deal, especially when you’re talking about high-end investment-grade cars like this 1970 Chevelle SS convertible. Yes, it is a real SS, a real LS5 car, and has been authenticated by none other than Jerry MacNeish of Camaro High Performance. It packs a date-code correct engine and transmission, and has been highly detailed for show. One of the more popular colors in 1970, Fathom Blue is a deep, rich metallic blue that looks spectacular on the smooth flanks of this Chevelle, and it’s also one of the most desirable colors today. Beautifully applied over first-rate bodywork using two-stage urethane, this car is show-ready today with nothing else needed. White SS stripes tie in perfectly with the Ivory interior and give it a traditional Chevelle performance look. Look at the way the panels line up and how even the gaps are all around—it’s rare to find this in a 41-year-old convertible, especially one that has been armed with a thumping big block its entire life. The cowl induction hood is fully functional, and the stripes have been embedded under the clear as is customary these days in high-end restorations. And it has all been wet sanded and buffed to a mirror-like shine.

Chrome, including the bumpers, hood pins, and badges, are all spectacular with no issues. The rear bumper features correct SS inserts, and the parking light and taillight lenses are fresh reproductions. There’s a lot of stainless trim on these cars as well, from the windshield surround to the wheel arches, and it has all been professionally straightened and polished until it matched the chrome’s brilliance. Glass is new all around, including the rear window on the snug-fitting convertible top.

The engine is a date-code correct replacement LS5 big block. It features a T0424CVQ assembly date, and it is a correct 454-360 horsepower V8 engine. The block number is 3963512, casting date D20-70. The engine block deck has been machined and sanded with sanding marks to make it appear original, which is crucial for points judging at the highest levels. Details are accurate throughout, from the hoses and clamps, to the Delco battery, to the freshly plated master cylinder and power brake booster. Chrome valve covers were part of the LS5 package, and combined with the bright Chevy Orange engine block and heads, the motor itself really pops inside this engine bay. Other details, colors, and markings are authentic, too. And in case you’re wondering, yes, it runs even better than it looks. Twist the key and it fires to life with a rumbling idle that tells you this is no ordinary grocery-getter Malibu, and the LS5 seems to have endless reserves of torque out on the open road.

This particular LS5 is backed by a durable M40 Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission, #413, with a 70-CR-1928 tag on right side of transmission. Like the engine, it’s correct for the car and extra steps have been taken to make it as authentic as possible for judging at the highest levels. Out back, a familiar Chevy 12-bolt rear packing 3.31 gears and a Posi unit transmits the power to the pavement. It sports a CCW0423B1 assembly date, with casting number 3969278NF on the pumpkin itself. The rest of the chassis is just as accurate, with satin black floors that show no signs of rust or previous damage. Correct shocks live at all four corners, with spiral shocks out back. An authentic dual exhaust system has been installed, correct down to the chrome tips under the rear bumper, and you’ll be delighted to see reproduction stickers and tags used throughout the chassis. 14-inch SS wheels wear reproduction F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas bias-ply tires, so this Chevelle rides and handles just as it would have when it was new.

Inside, you’ll find one of the most spectacular interiors we’ve seen in a long time. The Ivory looks simply amazing against the Fathom Blue paint, and is a much better choice than basic black, especially for a convertible that is going to spend a lot of time out in the sun. This is, of course, an original bucket seat car, and the interior has been fully restored to stock specifications. The seat-covers and foam are new, door panels are refreshed, and the dash pad has been replaced. Running down the center of it all is a full-length console with GM’s great-looking horseshoe shifter. The gauges look restored, with crisp faces and good chrome on the surrounds. New black carpets match the beautifully fitted black convertible top, which fits so snugly that there are no wrinkles or sags to be found. When it is folded, a new matching Ivory boot covers the top stack for a finished look. And in the trunk, spatter finish paint is protected by a correct trunk mat, matching spare tire, along with a complete jack assembly.

This is also a nicely documented car that includes items like the original owner’s manual and warranty booklet, as well as the original Protect-O-Plate which indicates that this car was sold new at Tom Gassett United Chevrolet, Inc., 495 Shrewsbury Street, Worcester, MA on September 27, 1970, likely making it among the last 1970 Chevelles sold before the 1971s started rolling out.

In today’s world of collector cars, it’s important to be careful with what you’re buying. The true investment-grade cars are those with documented proof that they are what they appear to be, and the best cars to own are those that have been correctly and authentically restored. This Chevelle is all that, being a real LS5 wearing its factory-issued colors, and carefully restored using date-code correct pieces. What an incredible way to end a wonderful year! Chevrolet muscle car collectors, wake up! I don’t know about you but I had never seen one of these cars in my life until this jewel arrived at our dealership a few days ago. Please feast your eyes on this perfect, rotisserie restored, numbers matching and fully documented 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6. It seems that only (2) of these incredible vehicles have surfaced in the last decade or so and they were both bench-seat, auto-on-the column cars. To obtain a real 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6 with its original factory Muncie M22 4-Speed transmission is truly a Chevrolet collectors dream!

When she was built on the first week of February 1970, she was obviously built for one reason and one reason only, going very fast from point A to point B. The fact that she was ordered with Cowl Induction, Factory Tachometer, Power Front Disc Brakes and the Radio Delete Option states the obvious. Early in life, she was raced and was very well known in the Kitimat BC area (see vintage photos and newspaper clippings). Fast forward to 2011. A no-expense spared, concours nut & bolt restoration was just completed on this LS6 El Camino and she retains her original numbers matching motor, original numbers matching Muncie M22 4-Speed Transmission and the original 4.10 positraction rear axle. The body & frame were walnut blasted to take everything down to bare metal and every nut & bolt was detailed. The sheet metal is laser straight and the body panels are perfectly aligned. Both fenders, both doors, floors, bed and tailgate are all original. New quarter panels and hood were installed during the restoration. All firewall stampings are present including stamping under the heater core and the heater fan motor, which both read 10B146532, Chevrolet 1970 Baltimore plant & last 6 digits of the VIN. The cowl tag & VIN tag have NEVER been off of the car. The correct (Code 10) Classic White paint w/ correct (Code D88) black stripes and (Code B) black vinyl top look absolutely stunning.

The paint is the new water base clear coat in the correct factory color. The chrome bumpers, stainless trim and all bright work is show quality. The paint & bodywork was performed by Travis Brown @ Sharp Touch and his work is second to none. When you slide inside the correct (Code 756) black vinyl bucket seat interior, you will swear that it’s 1970 all over again. The bucket seats, door panels, dash pad and carpet are all flawless. The original gauges, lights, blinkers, etc. work great. The whole interior is absolutely beautiful. It is a wonderful feeling, sitting in the cockpit of this ultra-rare LS6 El Camino w/ the factory Hurst Shifter in your hand. Now, let’s get the heart of this beast!

Pop open the hood and you will notice concours touches everywhere you look w/ correct tags and paint daubs exactly where they should be. Nestled inside the beautifully detailed engine bay resides the original numbers matching 454/450 hp LS6 motor. Engine part numbers & date codes are as follows: Block casting date is J 14 9 for October 14, 1969 and Block casting # 3963512. – Suffix code is T0123CRV – Partial VIN stamping is 188146532. This is one of the many Baltimore built cars that has the 188 stamping instead of the 1OB stamping.

There is a wealth of information on the web regarding this stamping from the Baltimore plant. The square port heads are both 3964291 with casting dates of L 8 9, December 8th 1969, and A 9 70, January 9th 1970 – Valve covers are the originals w/ drippers and were re-chromed – Intake manifold is the original 3963569 – Left exhaust manifold 879, right exhaust manifold 178 – Rebuilt water pump GM3 3969811 TX, date code A 6 70 for January 6th 1970 – AC Delco starter rebuilt type 418 – Correct Holley carburetor 3967477-GG w/ no date code – Water neck is original GM 3877660 – Clutch fan type 772 w/ no date code – Distributor #1111437, date code 9 M 10, December 10th 1969, rebuilt & re-curved – Correct alternator 1100837 37A CZ w/ deep groove pulley & correct fan dated O A 16 for January 16th 1970 – Water pump pulley 3947824 BV deep groove – Crank pulley 3955291 AB deep groove for LS6 – Smog pulley 3932458 DA deep groove – Original smog pump w/ original white fan, smog tube 3942533, diverter valve GH, smog check valves 5361992 – Original re-plated power brake booster master cylinder 5470409 – date coded spark plugs & wires.

The original numbers matching LS6 motor is linked to the original numbers matching Muncie M22 ‘Rock-Crusher’ 4-Speed transmission. Partial VIN stamp 188146532 and date code P0A23C, decodes as Muncie 1970 January 23rd M22. The tail shaft is part number 3978764GM. The main case is part number 3925661. It is the original 621 bell housing. The original 4.10 12-bolt Positraction rear axle is stamped CRW 0203B1 for February 3rd 1970, Buffalo plant shift 1.

The original motor & original transmission were meticulously rebuilt to stock specifications. The original rear end has new gear set, new bearings and new seals. This perfect 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6 starts, runs and drives beautifully and to say that it is fast would be a gross understatement. She literally flies! There is a reason these LS6 cars are sought after by collectors and after you drive this one, you will understand. Put her up on a lift and you will see an undercarriage that is as detailed as the topside of the car. Again, all tags and paint daubs are exactly where they should be and everything is absolutely spotless.

This incredible piece of muscle car history is fully documented by a GM of Canada Build Sheet and Chevrolet Micro Fische which shows all paint & trim codes as well as every option that she left the factory with. A complete custom appriasal was recently performed by John J. Carlson and is available to qualified buyers. The special Military Tribute Chevrolet Camaro, decorated by award-winning airbrush artist Mickey Harris, was sold in Scottsdale, Arizona.

With four members of the Achilles Freedom Team on the stage and several military personnel cheering from the audience, bidding quickly soared to six figures, then gradually climbed to the winning $175,000.

Before heading to Scottsdale, the car toured 30 military bases across the country, as well as the Pentagon. While introducing the 2010 Camaro SS on Sunday, award-winning artist Mickey Harris, whose airbrush designs adorn the car, joked that it was the only car that “burned rubber” in a Pentagon tunnel. “The Military Tribute Camaro was designed to honor our armed forces heroes. Now, thanks to its generous new owner, it will help our injured veterans rebuild their lives through the excellent work of the Achilles Freedom Team,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Global Chevrolet Marketing and Strategy.

The Military Tribute Camaro was commissioned by the GM Military Discount program. It represents all five branches of the armed forces (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard) and some of the military’s highest individual awards and current campaign medals.

Its designer, Harris, grew up on military installations. He has been airbrushing for 33 years and has an extensive portfolio of military art that has earned him worldwide acclaim.

Sunday’s Camaro wasn’t the first to be auctioned to benefit military programs. Last June, a first-off-the-line, 2012 Honor and Valor Limited Edition Camaro SS sold for $100,000 at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, Calif., with the sale proceeds going to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program.

Chevrolet’s support for military men and women includes:

Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans: In 2011, Chevrolet underwrote a portion of Achilles costs for participating in the Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit marathons, as well as other events. Chevrolet also has donated a Silverado HD truck and 20 hand cycles to the team.

GM Military Discount Program: Considered the most generous military discount program in the industry, GM offers GM Preferred Pricing (the same price extended to GM suppliers) on any Chevrolet (except Volt), Buick or GMC. On Jan. 19, Staff Sgt. Brian Nagy of Columbus, Ohio took delivery of a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze LTZ in the program’s Red White and Cruze Sweepstakes. In 2011, Chevy Silverado, Cruze and Camaro were the most popular vehicles sold.

Cell Phones for Soldiers: This program provides phone cards to service men and women. In 2011, Chevrolet raised $212,000 (worth 100,000 hours of talk time) from the auction proceeds of a 2012 Honor and Valor Camaro SS and Chevrolet donations of $100 for every car and truck sold during Military Appreciation Month in May. Since 2010, Chevrolet has collected more than 70,000 used cell phones, worth 70,000 hours of talk time.

Travis Manion Foundation: The GM Foundation provided $250,000 to this foundation that assists veterans and the families of fallen heroes. Its namesake is First Lt. Travis L. Manion, killed in 2007 in Iraq by sniper fire while defending against an enemy ambush.

Chevrolet also sponsors special activities throughout the year for active and retired military members and their families.

The Corvette 427 Convertible, which arrives at U.S. Chevrolet dealers this summer, blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models. The Vehicle Identification Number ending in 001 was sold in the auction.

Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. Early 427-powered Corvettes, particularly convertibles, offered from 1966 to 1969 are some of the most-coveted and collectable Corvettes ever produced.

Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports teamed up for the auction, with four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon and team owner Rick Hendrick, to raise a total of $700,000 for the AARP’s Drive to End Hunger food relief program.

Advertisement to air during Super Bowl XLVI

DETROIT – “Chevy Happy Grad,” an ad submitted by 26-year old Long Island resident Zach Borst, will be aired during the telecast of Super Bowl XLVI, beating out submissions by independent filmmakers from around the world as part of Chevrolet’s Route 66 Super Bowl ad contest.

The ads had more than 32 million total online views between December 22 and January 14.

“We asked filmmakers to depict life’s journey and how Chevrolet is there along the way,” said General Motors Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick. “When I saw Zach’s spot, I had to laugh, because the situation is something many families can related to – expectation and reality. ‘Happy Grad’ clearly shows the passion that Chevrolet elicits.”

Borst’s audience on Super Bowl Sunday is expected to exceed 110 million television viewers. “Chevy Happy Grad” was filmed on location near his home on Long Island during a weather window that offered Zach, his cast and crew only four hours to complete the project.

“My Dad was a cop and worked real hard to be able to buy his kids their first cars. They were used, but mine meant the world to me,” Borst said. “Then I wondered what it would look like if I got a brand new Camaro? I mean, after all, who wouldn’t want a Camaro as a graduation gift?”

Dave Strickler’s 1968 Camaro Z/28 “Old Reliable”

Ok, this one is a real thing… and with list price: US $499,900.00 RK Motors Charlotte provides a real iconic muscle car. Here are the details:

Automotive history lives and breathes at RK Motors Charlotte. You know we are passionate about vintage racing, having completely restored “Project Six Pack” to its original state, and more recently presenting the legendary Arlen Vankes 1967 HEMI Barracuda. Today we are pleased to announce yet another milestone race vehicle coming to us from one of the top names in the Camaro hobby. The car is Dave Sticklers 1968 Camaro Z/28 that won the 1968 Super Stock World Championship, and the man is Camaro historian and authenticity expert, Jerry MacNeish. The car has been comprehensively restored to as-raced condition, including some incredibly rare NOS items that came from Jerry’s personal collection. If there is a more thoroughly documented, well-known, relevant and accurate early Camaro out there, I’d like to see it. Make no mistake: this is the ultimate Z/28 and the cornerstone of any significant Chevrolet muscle collection.

Racing legend Dave Strickler dominated NHRA Super Stock racing during the 1968 season with this Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins-prepared Z/28 Camaro. Equipped with a stock intake manifold and carburetor, a stock hood, Stahl Headers, 5.38 gears, and nine-inch slicks, the “Old Reliable” ran elapsed times in the 11.70s at roughly 116 mph, which made it competitive with many big block Super Stock Camaros of the same time period. Its dominance culminated in two of Sticklers biggest wins: on Sunday, October 6, 1968, Strickler drove to a decisive victory over a stellar field at the NHRA Super Stock All-Star Meet at Englishtown Raceway Park. Two weeks later, he went on to capture the 1968 Super Stock World Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then the most prestigious S/S event on the NHRA calendar. Read more and see the gallery!

The “Old Reliable” Z/28 was featured in over 30 automotive publications during 1968 and 1969, making it the most famous Z/28 Camaro in race car history! Champion Spark Plugs, and Hooker Headers, two original sponsors, featured this car in their 1968 national advertising, placing ads in virtually all major automotive publications. Thousands of Camaro enthusiasts throughout the country were influenced by this “World Class” Camaro.

The Dave Strickler legacy speaks for itself: sixteen national class championships, forty-one national and world records, and a world championship title.

Following the 1968 season, this car was retired from active competition and sold, presumably lost to history. This was common at the time, as top racers knew that the factory would supply them with a new car each year, and old racing cars were not historically noteworthy at the time. Of course, we know differently today, but for more than 20 years, the “Old Reliable” Camaro languished in obscurity, trading hands twice, and being raced in relative anonymity at tracks all over the country. It was always a well-prepped car, but there was nothing beyond its incredible history that would make it immediately recognizable once the factory Corvette Bronze paint was covered up.

In March of 1993, Jerry MacNeish located and purchased Dave Strickler’s “Old Reliable” Z/28 race car. It was actually through the help of Michael Strickler (Dave’s son) that MacNeish was able to track the car down. The Strickler family had kept documentation with the vehicle’s VIN number. Based on that, Jerry located the exact car used to win the 1968 World Championship and bought it on the spot, knowing what he had found. According to an article in “Musclecar Review” magazine, the car was just days away from being cut up for scrap when Jerry rescued it. Later, he discovered that the car still carried its original ball joint spacers, proving that this was EXACTLY the car Dave Strickler drove to the World Championship.

In the summer of 1993, the detailed restoration began. Jerry’s intention was to restore the car to the exact condition in which it was campaigned in 1968. Drawing on extensive research, historical documents, photographs, articles, and other sources, Jerry and his team were able to precisely duplicate the cars decals and lettering (all of which was done by hand, as original, by the way). Mechanically, the car was better than new in every way, with upgrades that would make it competitive with modern machinery in NHRA’s Stock Eliminator Class.

In the summer of 1994, “Old Reliable” made its debut at Super Chevy Weekend held at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, PA. It was still equipped with an original balanced and blue printed 302 engine. That same year, the “Old Reliable” Z/28 Camaro won the prestigious “Best of Show Award” at the US Camaro Nationals held in Dearborn, Michigan. In 1995, MacNeish finished the racing season placing 11th in Division One out of 185 drivers in NHRA’s Stock Eliminator Class. In 1998, “Old Reliable” ran consistent elapsed times in the 11.20s at over 119 mph, (and that’s without a crossram!). Not too bad for a stock 302 engine.

Later, in 2002, Jerry piloted “Old Reliable” to a win at the Delmar, Delaware US-13 NHRA divisional points race and finished out the season in the top 10 placing 8th for the year in Division One and 24th in NHRA world points. In 2004, “Old Reliable” won the E/Stock class at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and by that point ran 10.80s at almost 123 MPH. Since 1998, “Old Reliable” has accomplished many NHRA class wins and several Stock Eliminator wins.

In January of 2008, Jerry MacLeish’s company, Camaro Hi-Performance, dismantled this car and did the necessary restoration work to put this Z/28 back to its original 1968 race configuration when it won the NHRA world championship title. Every detail is correct, down to the virtually unobtainable original Stahl front drag tires, Stahl tachometer, and rare cowl plenum air cleaner.

According to the original Pennsylvania title that comes with the car, this Camaro was never registered and as a race car, why would it be? As a result, it might be one of the lowest-mileage 1968 Camaros in existence and despite its history at the race track, much of it was in astoundingly original condition. During the 1993 restoration, the floors were replaced, and the hood and trunk lid were replaced with NOS pieces because a previous owner had installed fiberglass reproductions. All the original trim was still on the car and it was fully polished and restored as well. The cars original Corvette Bronze paint was duplicated in 2-stage urethane for a killer shine that will last for another 40 years. You’ll note that the stripes have been embedded in the clear and are not decals as original, but this is definitely an improvement. Before you accuse them of taking the easy way out, however, note that they even went so far as to duplicate the decals cut-out around the trunk-mounted “Camaro” emblem most painters paint the strip and just install the badge over it. The quarter panels required a great deal of restoration work, since they had been cut and mangled by a previous owner to fit larger slicks, but those are, indeed, the original quarters.

Once the paint was in place and polished to perfection, Jerry and his team of craftsmen painstakingly duplicated every decal, every stripe, and every letter on the original cars paint scheme. If the original decal was vinyl, the new ones were made in vinyl. If it was hand-painted, it was again hand-painted on the car. Nothing was overlooked, and comparing photos from 1968 and from today, you need to look at the clothes people are wearing to determine which is the original and which is the restored car. Although the car was actively raced for a decade since it was restored, there’s very little evidence of it. The chrome is beautiful, the paint is unblemished, and the car is completely show-ready. Of course, we know that the original was never, ever this nice, but it sure is amazing to see it in the flesh looking this spectacular.

Similarly, the interior of this car is 100% original from headliner to carpets. As I mentioned, the car really doesn’t have any notable mileage on it, and the driver’s seat is the only one to ever carry a human posterior. The only change from original race configuration is the addition of a 6-point roll cage and safety harnesses, which were required when Jerry started campaigning the car competitively, and surely an addition that no purist will object to. You’ll also note that this is an original radio delete car with the original block-off plate still in place within the dashboard. The original gauges are bright and clean and the odometer shows a little over 5 miles! An original Stahl tach is perched in its original location on the steering column, and the two original accessory gauges still hang proudly below the center of the dash ahead of the original Hurst shifter. The correct RS wheel is still in place (this is a real RS Z/28 according to the window sticker), the original seats are still soft and comfortable, and the door panels show no signs of elbows ever resting on the armrests. This car is truly a time capsule, not only for race enthusiasts, but for Camaro restorers anxious to see exactly how the factory assembled these cars when they were new. Surprise: they were awfully damned nice.

The engine is a correct Z/28 302 that has been built largely to the specifications it used in 1968. There’s an original 30-30 (Z/28) camshaft in the center of the block acting on a set of solid lifters, a pair of cast iron #3917291 cylinder heads (completely stock, no porting allowed), along with stock rocker arms and valve springs. The intake is a correct 302 aluminum intake, casting #3917610, topped by a Holley #4053, 780 CFM 4-barrel carburetor. Compression is around 11:1, and it currently generates right around 400 horsepower according to Jerry. Shocking that a 400 horsepower car could be a national champion, but when you can launch as hard as this one does (there are photos showing this small block car with its front wheels a foot in the air), it’s not surprising. Up top there’s an incredibly rare factory cowl plenum air cleaner that draws air from the cowl area instead of from a hood scoop if you can even find one of these today, expect to pay several thousand dollars for it. You’ll also notice the twin groove pulleys that were designed to eliminate belt jumping at high speeds (this engines shift points are at 8200 RPM!). Exhaust is handled by a set of Hooker long-tube headers and there is no exhaust system. This monster sounds AMAZING!

Living behind the engine is an as-original Muncie M22 4-speed manual topped by a Hurst shifter. There’s a photo in the vast stack of materials that comes with this car that shows Dave Strickler examining the cars transmission during servicing, and thanks to the window sticker, there’s no doubt that this was a 4-speed car from the beginning. There’s also a 10-inch 3-finger clutch from Advance Clutch Technology, twisting a set of 5.57 gears in the GM 12-bolt out back. It’s interesting to note that the car was originally raced with a set of 5.38 gears, and was factory delivered with 4.88s, which were the tallest gears available on the Camaro in 1968.

The suspension is amazingly original, from the as-raced A-arms, springs, and shocks up front, to the leaf springs out back assisted by long traction bars. Factory disc brakes up front and drums out back provide adequate stopping power. You’ll notice a fresh stock-type gas tank out back assisted by an electric fuel pump for consistent fuel supply under load. The wheels are original Cragars, with the aforementioned and incredibly rare Stahl skinnies up front and a pair of Mickey Thompson slicks out back.

Documentation? What do you expect when the car is one of the most famous race cars of all time and the restorer is the foremost expert on early Camaros? There are pages and pages and pages of period articles, print features, photographs and other literature that I can’t possibly catalog it all. Jerry MacNeish has also compiled several concise histories on the car that are included along with a certificate of authenticity signed by Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins and Susan Strickler, Dave Sticklers widow. As I mentioned earlier, there’s also a copy of the original Pennsylvania title and a letter from the National Insurance Crime Bureau that officially identifies this cars VIN as the same one Dave Strickler campaigned in 1968. Then there’s the registration from the previous owner dated 7/14/1984, where he paid $1900 for the car. We also have duplicates of the original window sticker, which shows that this is a real 4-speed, Rally Sport Z/28 car, and that it was delivered to Ammon R. Smith Auto Company in York, Pennsylvania when new. Jerry has also collected extensive period photographs of the car, advertisements from Hooker, Pennzoil, Champion and others that feature this car prominently in their advertising. This car was also duplicated as a 1:18 scale model by ExactDetail Replicas, and was featured in much of their advertising as well. There’s even a biography on Dave Strickler himself that prominently features the “Old Reliable.” This is an absolutely astounding documentation package that removes any doubt about this cars incredible history and provenance.

What else can I say? This car is the real deal, fully documented and restored by the most knowledgeable person in the industry. It is exactly in the smallest details, and has four decades of successful race history behind it (what, you think its history ended in 1969? Jerry MacNeish won quite a bit with it, too!). There are period pieces and equipment on this car that are simply not available anywhere at any price, so duplicating this restoration would be virtually impossible today. The car is in absolute showroom condition throughout and will be welcome at shows around the country. Best of all, it remains in ready-to-race condition, prepared to hammer down the track as it did so successfully 42 years ago. If you are a race fan, a Camaro enthusiast, or both, this is a once-in-a-lifetime car. Corvette Marks 60 Years of Performance with 427 Convertible

DETROIT – Chevrolet today unveiled the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition – the fastest, most capable convertible in Corvette’s history – as well as a 60th Anniversary Package that will be available on all 2013 Corvette models.

“The 2013 model year will be historic for Corvette, marking its 60th Anniversary and the final year for the current ‘C6′ generation,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Global Marketing and Strategy for Chevrolet. “We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate these milestones than bringing back one of the most-coveted combinations in the brand’s history – the Corvette convertible and a 427 cubic-inch engine.”

The 60th Anniversary Package and 427 Convertible will make their public debut at the Barrett Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan 21, and will arrive at U.S. Chevrolet dealers early this summer.

Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition
The Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history.

Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The LS7 was co-developed with the Corvette Le Mans-winning GT1 engine and features lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, as well as racing-inspired high-flow cylinder heads and a dry-sump oiling system. It is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Center, where customers who purchase the 427 Convertible Collector Edition can purchase the Corvette Build Experience option and assemble the engine that will power their new car. Read more!

Supporting performance elements in the Corvette 427 Convertible include the driveline and rear axle system from the Corvette Z06, a rear-mounted battery and standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control. The standard 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are wrapped in ZR1-style Michelin PS2 tires. Lightweight machine-face Cup wheels – introduced on the 2012 Corvette Z06 with Z07 and Corvette ZR1 with PDE performance packages – come standard and include unique gray-painted pockets. Black Cup wheels or chrome ZR1-style wheels are also available.

The 427 Convertible also features several carbon-fiber components that help reduce weight, including:
• Carbon fiber raised hood (introduced on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Edition)
• Carbon fiber Z06-style fenders
• Carbon fiber floor panels
• The “CFZ” carbon fiber front splitter and rocker panels are optional on the 427 Convertible, and included with the 60th Anniversary package

The weight reduction brings the 427 Convertible’s curb weight to 3,355 pounds (1,522 kg). Combined with its 505-horsepower LS7 engine, it gives the 427 Convertible a power-to-weight ratio of 6.64 – or one horsepower for every 6.64 pounds of vehicle mass. That’s better than:
• Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet – 6.90
• Audi R8 5.2 RSI Spyder – 7.58
• Aston Martin DBS Volante Convertible – 7.82
• Ferrari California Convertible – 8.31

The combination of low mass and high output will make the 427 Convertible one of the fastest convertibles in the world, delivering estimated 0-60 performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile performance of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and a top speed of more than 190 mph.

The 427 Convertible is available in 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim levels and will carry a unique vehicle identification number sequence, similar to the Corvette ZR1.

Corvette 60th Anniversary Package
All 2013 Corvette models, including the 427 Convertible, will be available with a 60th Anniversary Package, featuring an Arctic White exterior with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior with suede accents. Convertible models will have a blue top.

Additional content includes a ZR1-style rear spoiler, special badging, gray-painted brake calipers and the “60th” logo on the wheel center caps, steering wheel and seat headrests. An optional graphics package adds full-length racing stripes in Pearl Silver Blue, including a tonal stripe stitched into the convertible top, extending the graphic theme over the roof.

For 2013, all Corvettes will feature 60th Anniversary badges on the fascias and the “waterfall” panel on convertible models, as well as 60th logos in the instrument panel gauge cluster and on the sill plates.

Charity Auction at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale
The first Corvette 427 Convertible offered to the public will go to the highest bidder at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction, on Saturday, Jan. 21. Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports are teaming up for the auction, including four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon and team owner Rick Hendrick. Proceeds from the sale will benefit AARP’s Drive to End Hunger initiative.

Drive to End Hunger is part of a multi-year sponsorship for Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet which aims to address the growing problem of hunger among older Americans.

A legacy of 427-powered Corvettes
Early 427-powered Corvettes, particularly convertibles, offered from 1966 to 1969 are some of the most-coveted and collectable Corvettes ever produced.

The first 427-powered Corvette rolled off the assembly line for the 1966 model year. Two performance levels of the 427 were initially offered – an “L30″ version rated at 390 horsepower and the “L72,” which cranked out 425 horsepower. Both were rated at 460 lb-ft. of torque.

The range of 427 engines grew in 1967, with the addition of the “L71″ and “L88″ options. The L71 added a unique triple-carburetor induction system that helped boost output to 435 horsepower. Known to collectors as “427/435″ cars, these ’67 models – especially the convertibles – are especially sought-after collector cars.

The “L88″ delivered 430-horsepower (with a single four-barrel carburetor) thanks to racing-tuned aluminum heads. Intended for customers who would immediately transform their new Corvette into a race car, the L88 was installed in just 216 production Corvettes between 1967 and 1969.

In 1969, a special “L89″ 427 engine combined the L71′s induction system with the L88′s aluminum heads, offering maximum horsepower with an approximately 100-pound weight advantage over the standard iron heads. Also in 1969, Chevrolet built two “ZL1″ 427 Corvette coupes. The ZL1 engine was essentially an all-aluminum version of the L88, with the aluminum cylinder block and heads offering a tremendous weight advantage for racing. More of the engines were sold as crate engines to racers.

By 1970, the big-block engine grew to 454 cubic inches, just as the trend in high-compression, high-performance engines was beginning to wane. The four-year run of 427 Corvettes was already established as the golden era of performance muscle cars.

That was the time when my curiosity prevailed. I browsed that section and really loved the Chevy SS racing t-shirts and the Chevrolet Legends t-shirt. The last one was featuring the Chevelle SS, Nova SS and the Z28 Camaro iconic muscle cars on the back. These products are made of 100% high quality cotton with a silk-screen design. Actually, I still regret not buying this one…

“I have been collecting cars for over 30 years and have decided to sell my most prized and rare car in my garage. If you are a true and serious collector, you may want to consider looking at this car in greater detail.

I am selling my 1967 427/435 Marina Blue, 4 speed Corvette Coupe with A.I.R. (California Car with Air Injector Reactor). The car underwent a complete frame off restoration by one of the finest Corvette Restorers in the Country. Last Month, it was judged by the NCRS and won the Top Flight award with a score of 98.7! This is a 4 owner California car (I am the 4th owner) with just 23,754 DOCUMENTED Miles! My car has the ORIGINAL Engine, Transmission and rear end and has all numbers matching components throughout the entire car(which is fairly rare in today’s world of restamped engines and fake big block cars). I searched for over 2 years to find this car, as I have only seen 2 other cars like this in my life.

The restoration alone took almost a year and a half and was well over $100,000 (not counting the cost of the car). No expense was spared to ensure that this corvette came out correctly. Every component and part has been completely rebuilt or is NOS or new. I have owned many corvettes over the years with several Top Flight as well as Duntov Cars. None of those scored as high, were as correct or were as rare as this California 427/435 A.I.R. car.

As noted above, this is an early 1967 (Nov. 2, 1966) Marina Blue car with White Stinger hood, White and Blue two tone interior and the interesting option of Power Windows. The car has the off-road exhaust, Redlines and Rallys, exactly the way it rolled off the dealer floor.

The History of the car is fairly straight forward. The car was originally sold in Manhattan Beach, CA in 1966 and the original owner was then transferred to Evansville, Indiana. He sold the car to the second owner on 11/1/1969. The car was driven until the third owner purchased it in the Spring of 1976. The third owner drove it for a few years and then decided to store it in a Barn in Jefferson City, MO where it sat until just a few years ago. I then purchased it and decided to bring it back to it’s original glory.

I can go through the entire car, but suffice to say that everything is pristine, correct, numbers matching, accurate, original, etc….

I have over 80 current pictures available to view below as well as a complete photo library of the restroration on a CD that goes to the new owner. Additionally I have the original Owners Manual and Indiana inspection receipts documenting the mileage as well as a copy of the old title that lists Owner 2 and 3 as well as the documented miles. It now has a current GA title that again lists the documented miles. The gas tank was replaced in the summer of 1977 when the 3rd owner was on a roadtrip, so there is not a tank sticker available.

I highly encourage any seriously interested buyer to come view the car in person or send a qualified NCRS judge or Corvette expert to inspect this car. If you are looking for one of the most collectible and rare cars to add to your collection, I highly recommend you consider this car.

If you look at my feedback and the type and condition of the cars I have owned and sold on ebay over the past 10 years, you will see that I try to own only the best cars in the world. I have sold several cars at Barrett Jackson over the years and all have gone across the block during primetime on Saturday. Several Big Block Corvettes and a couple of Boss 429’s. (I still have one of those in the stable, but it is not currently for sale). I enjoy them for a few years until I get the bug to buy something else. The reason I am selling is that I have been thinking about getting something I have not had before so……

I may be interested in a partial trade, as I am looking to enjoy driving a car (both this car and the Boss 429 are far too pristine and rare to take out and drive-and Yes, they are trailer queens that most likely belong in a museum). Possible trades could be: Aston Martin, Wil Cooksey Corvette, Z06, Boss 302, Shelby GT500 KR, Parnelli Jones Saleen or Roush Mustang, Nissan GT-R or other interesting muscle car that could be a classic or current model. May even take a newer Tundra 4×4 or F150 4×4 to tow the Boss around to shows or a Cobalt boat.

According to Garage Style Magazine, the vehicle, a 2010 convertible, managed to raise $333,000, with the proceeds going to Operation Mend, a charity that includes the Ronald Reagan UCLA medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and the VA-Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and aims to treat US Army members that were severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
