Effingham, Ill. (September 7, 2011)-Two beloved examples of American culture, Corvettes
and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, are coming together for the first time at Mid America
Motorworks’ 18th Annual Corvette Funfest Sept. 15-18 in Effingham, Ill.

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the American icon in the shape of a hot dog and
bun. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be on display throughout the weekend. The display
will give guests the chance to visit the hot dog on wheels and learn more about the legendary
vehicle from the brand representatives, affectionately called Hotdoggers.

“The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is about as American as you can get along with the Corvette,”
said Mike Yager, Chief Cheerleader and Founder of Mid America Motorworks. “I am beyond

At 27 feet long and 11 feet tall, outward appearances suggest the Wienermobile and Corvettes
are quite different, but it’s what’s on the inside that actually makes these distinctive vehicles
automotive cousins.

Just like a Corvette, the Wienermobile rides on a GM built chassis – a tradition since 1969 when
it was actually sourced from Chevrolet. Additionally, the Wienermobile is powered by a 6.0-
liter Vortec V8, which is also built by GM and shares many characteristics with modern Corvette
engines.

Registration for Corvette Funfest is up nearly 40 percent over last year, easily confirming its
status as the largest Corvette Party in the world. This year’s theme is “America’s Star Spangled
Corvette Party.” There’s no better way to celebrate America’s Sportscar than with a red, white
and blue theme. A patriotic premium parking display will greet enthusiasts with red, white and
blue Corvettes as they enter the show field.

Corvette Muscle: GM Invests $131 Million in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – General Motors said Wednesday it will invest $131 million in the Bowling Green Assembly plant to support production of the next generation Chevrolet Corvette, adding about 250 jobs.

“This is a significant day for anyone who believes that America should build world-class, high-performance products,” said Mark Reuss, GM North America president. “Corvette has no domestic peer for performance and pedigree and stands alongside the world’s best supercars with almost 60 years of continuous heritage.

“This investment in Kentucky is among $3.4 billion made in the United States since mid-2009 to keep or create more than 9,000 jobs for American workers,” Reuss said. Read more!

The announcement came at an event held at the plant with employees and several special guests, including Gov. Steve Beshear. The governor last June signed a bill designating the Corvette as the official state sports car of Kentucky.

“Kentucky has a longstanding, mutually beneficial relationship with GM and this significant investment further demonstrates the strength of our partnership,” Beshear said.

The plant in Bowling Green is scheduled to continue building the current generation Corvette for at least the next two model years, including the 2012 model year that begins this summer. During this period, the investment starts to take effect, preparing the facility for the next-generation Corvette.

Bowling Green is the exclusive manufacturer of all versions of the Chevrolet Corvette – Coupe, Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1. Corvette’s current generation, the sixth in its 58-year history, has seen the car enter the realm of the world’s highest-performing cars.

Nearly 400 production workers, represented by the UAW Local 2164, assemble these vehicles on a one-shift, 10-hour, Monday-Thursday production schedule. The plant employs many specialized operations, including unique hand-crafted techniques. Bowling Green has been home to Corvette production since 1981.

“We need to rebuild the great American middle class. There is no better way to achieve this worthy goal than providing meaningful jobs like the ones being created in Bowling Green,” said UAW Vice President Joe Ashton. ” Our members have earned this investment through their hard work focused on the Corvette customers’ unique desire for high performance, quality, and style.

“I offer my congratulations to a great American Union Workforce, Local 2164, for a job well done.”

The additional jobs will be filled in accordance with the United Auto Workers -GM National Agreement.

Approximately 50,000 tourists visit the Bowling Green plant annually to catch a glimpse of the manufacturing process, some even watching their new cars being completed before taking delivery from the neighboring National Corvette Museum.

2011 CHEVROLET CORVETTE Z06X TRACK CAR CONCEPT

The Corvette Z06X Concept showcases how an enthusiast can leverage Chevrolet’s expanding portfolio of performance parts to create a full-on track car. Chevrolet teamed with Pratt and Miller, partners in Corvette Racing in the American LeMans Series, to create this Z06X track car concept.

“Racing is an integral part of Corvette performance and technology,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “This concept car represents a mid-point between our GT race car and the production Z06, prepared by the team responsible for the Corvette Racing C6.R race cars, and featuring many performance parts owners can choose today.”

The Z06X concept is based on the Corvette Z06 with the 1LZ equipment package, along with the Z07 Performance Package and CFZ Carbon Fiber Package. The 2011 Z06 with the Z07 package creates the lightest production Corvette and includes carbon ceramic brakes and Magnetic Ride Control, while the CFZ package offers body components that enhance aerodynamic down force on the race track, including a front splitter. The Z06X Concept features competition-oriented modifications including: an adjustable carbon fiber rear wing, a polycarbonate rear window, roll cage, racing seat and safety harness, racing wheels, suspension enhancements – including coil-over struts with fully adjustable camber plates – racing-spec cooling system and more. The radio, carpeting and sound-deadening material are also removed.

The concept vehicle wears a low-gloss Icy White Metallic exterior color, accented with exposed carbon fiber body components and red trim. It rides on black racing wheels and racing tires. The interior is all business, with a racing seat, window net and roll cage-mounted camera system. It includes a racing pedal kit, a Genuine Corvette Accessory.

“It’s a classic case of form following function,” said Dave Ross, design manager. “The exterior color and accents were carefully selected to enhance the Corvette’s racing-influenced design, but there’s nothing superfluous in the Z06X’s design – everything is there for a reason.”

2011 CHEVROLET CORVETTE JAKE EDITION CONCEPT
He started off as a discreet logo in 2005 that symbolized a tenacious attitude of the Corvette Racing team and ever since, the skull mascot known as Jake has grown to embody the determination and triumphs of the team. Now, Chevrolet designers have created the Corvette Jake Edition Concept, a special Grand Sport convertible concept vehicle that celebrates Corvette’s racing spirit.

The Corvette Jake Edition is a Grand Sport Coupe, with Z06 wheels featuring the Competition Gray finish. The matte Jake hood graphic from the GT1 commemorative model adds a subtle visual statement, while a host of other accessories round out the car’s unique appearance. Most of the parts added to this special Grand Sport are available today as Genuine Corvette Accessories or through any Chevrolet dealer’s parts department.

“Jake is more than the mascot for Corvette Racing, he personifies the Corvette spirit,” said Dave Ross, design manager. “We designed this concept to demonstrate how any enthusiast could create his own Jake special model with parts available from any Chevrolet dealership.”

Some of the accessories used to create the Corvette Jake concept are not currently available, but are planned for future release, including Jake-logo floor mats, console lid, wheel center caps and more. Other parts, including the hood graphic and Z06 wheels, are offered as Genuine Corvette Accessories.

“The Corvette has long inspired car enthusiasts to personalize it. The Jake concept shows one very unique way to do it,” said Ross. “With the great variety of accessories and other parts available, there’s virtually no limit to how you can make your Corvette stand apart from all others.”

The name “Grand Sport” is entrenched in the racing history of the Chevrolet Corvette. Now, for the 2010 model year, there is a new edition that evokes memories of the racecars of the seventies – and Geigercars.de has already given these rockets an additional performance upgrade.

With the LS3 V8 under the bonnet, and the corresponding 430 hp and 575 Nm in torque, the Grand Sport is certainly not short of legs when it leaves the factory. But why be satisfied with production line performance, when tuning specialist Geigercars.de can give you something more? Thanks to the Munich pros, a supercharger with a fat 2.3 litres capacity sits on top of the eight-cylinder engine, which itself exhibits a volume of 6.2 litres. The result is a growth in the power of the Corvette to an immense 588 hp at 6,490 rpm, and torque of 738 Nm at 4,030 rpm. This ultimate sports car negotiates the sprint to 100 km/h in less than four seconds from contact, and it’s not until reaching 337 km/h that the Geigercars.de rocket is forced to relent to wind resistance.

The Grand Sport impresses both aesthetically and technically, with wider front and rear fenders with additional vents, to accommodate the larger brakes of the sister model Z06 with its 355 mm, six-cylinder discs at the front axle, and 340 mm, four-cylinder discs at the rear. The front diffuser and larger rear spoiler are also borrowed from the engineers of the Corvette Z06. Sway bars, shock absorbers and springs have also been overhauled in addition to the six-speed transmission, while a dry sump oil system and differential cooler are also on board. The battery of the Grand Sport has been relocated to the rear. Optimum road contact is guaranteed by the 18 and 19 inch light alloy rims, with 275/35 and imposing 325/30 tyres.

Special factory-installed emblems on the front fenders, and not least the special graphics applied by Geigercars.de to the fenders, bonnet and boot lid, draw even the untrained eye to the character of this very special elite athlete – and underline that certain something about the entire project perfectly.

Jan Magnussen in the #3 car began leaving his pit box after an unscheduled stop to repair a power steering hose when Emmanuel Collard in the #4 Vette came out of nowhere and slammed into his side. The #4 car immediately went behind pit wall for repairs, but since the #3 car was already leaving the pits, it was forced to limp around an entire lap with a flat front tire before returning for repairs. The collision effectively took both Corvettes out of contention for a podium spot, though they did manage to finish the race in 8th and 9th place.

Maybe a 4-door Corvette is going to be designed. According to a report by Wards Automotive, it is possible.

If we take a look at another great car – The Porsche Panamera, we can see a 4-door successful selling automobile. With creating a 4-door Corvette, Chevrolet could introduce a higher-volume V6-powered version. This idea is not new – it has been debated in the past with the 2-door Corvette as a way to attract female buyers and those less interested in the car’s V8 performance and more its stylish good looks.

The guys from Autoguide think that it may help GM reduce costs, increase profitability and offer a unique product. Would it devalue the Corvette name? Probably not, considering the Panamera doesn’t seem to have hurt the Porsche 911. Would it be hideous? Quite possibly. But again, that hasn’t seem to hamper sales of Porsche’s new 4-door.

In the first of twelve episodes, Corvette Racing shares a behind-the-scenes look at the team’s preparations for the 12 Hours of Sebring, the start of the 2010 ALMS season. The team is clear about one thing: amid tough competition, they remain focused on winning.

DETROIT — When the 2006 Corvette Z06 was introduced, it represented the closest connection to the Corvette race cars ever. The 2009 Corvette ZR1 closed the gap between racing and production even further. This year, Corvette continues its tradition of track-to-street technology transfer with the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

“Designed to further incorporate technology developed through racing, the Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first race in the 24 Hours of LeMans,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. “With a limited production of 500 units, this car is a must-have for the true Corvette collector and driving enthusiast.”

The Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is another example of the expanded Corvette line-up. Five years ago, customers had the choice of a Corvette coupe or convertible. With the addition of the Z06, Grand Sport coupe and convertible and ZR1, Corvette enthusiasts now have more choices than ever.

“For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. “For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time.”

This limited edition Z06 will boast Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with specific dark gray metallic calipers. These powerful brakes were first introduced on the ZR1. Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels complement the car’s Michelin PS2 tires. Other mechanical features include Magnetic Selective Ride Control for the first time on the Z06 and enhanced cooling. The car also features a special carbon pattern engine cover.

The Corvette Z06 Carbon will be available in two colors: Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06′s dynamic design and reduce mass and aerodynamic lift. For track events, customers can also install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

The Z06 Carbon’s ebony leather and suede interior is complemented by blue or orange seat stitching to match the exterior color chosen. Other features include a unique steering wheel emblem, sill plate and logoed headrest. The suede used on the steering wheel, shifter, seat inserts, armrests and doors add to the luxury of this limited edition Z06.

An optional Z07 performance package that includes the mechanical upgrades introduced on the Z06 Carbon can be added to a regular 2011 Z06. This package also includes Competition Gray 20-spoke wheels and all the chassis and cooling upgrades.

The CFZ Z06 carbon fiber package includes black carbon fiber rockers, splitter and roof panel with the full-width body color spoiler. It can also be purchased with or without the Z07 package on regular Z06 models.

The 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition, as well as the new Z07 and CFZ Z06 option packages will be available in late summer.

Obviously this move from GM are aimed to attract buyers in Europe, where the car has little appeal, and young U.S. buyers. According to The Power Information Network, the current average age of a Corvette buyer is 54. Critics says it looks big with a cheap-looking interior. Welburn agrees with the interior “problem” – “The execution, materials selection–it’s got to be a much better interior. Our customers desire that.” And we’ll add what industry says – a redesign is due in two to three years.

Welburn compares today’s Corvette with Porsche 911 – they are about the same size, but the styling makes it look larger. Let’s cite Welburn again – “We have to develop a design that feels trimmer, meaner, to go along with the incredible performance that the car has.” He also intended it’s about time for development of the Corvette, but the new Corvette can’t be so far away in concept than today’s Corvette.

Members of Corvette Racing share their passion for racing and what it means to represent Corvette in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Featured in the video are Mark Kent, manager, GM Racing, Gary Pratt, chief engineer and co-founder of Pratt & Miller engineering, and Doug Fehan, program manager, Corvette Racing. This is a preview of what to expect from the Corvette Racing Team as they document the ALMS season in their upcoming video series.

The empty engine compartment was filled with an LS1 and six-speed modified with some aftermarket and custom-built parts. The extensive upgrades to the drivetrain and suspension turned the Corvette into a ride that, as Gary puts it, “drives like a banshee. It goes brutally fast. It stops on a dime. It corners. It does it all well!”

It also has looks that can keep up with all that performance. The body was customized left to right, front to back, and turned into a true windowless, topless roadster. If the profile of Gary’s Corvette looks a little more rakish than other ’60s you’ve seen, it’s not the angle of the photo. When the wrecked front clip was replaced, the new front end was installed 1 1/2 inches lower, bringing the nose closer to the pavement, changing the profile line. It was a huge job for a subtle change, but it completely transforms the personality of the custom Corvette from sporty to something a little more aggressive. The jet black paint job just adds to the effect.

The effect is enhanced even more when Gary gets behind the wheel. In addition to just liking high-performance cars, Gary has a little bit of experience with road racing and drag racing, and is a two-time winner of the Great American Race.

Chassis
There’s more to this custom Corvette than meets the eye. The handling that helped this thing move through the cones is the result of a completely new chassis built around a full-tube frame, with ’96 Corvette IFS and IRS parts. In addition, the ride is controlled by ShockWaves air shocks from Air Ride Technologies.

Drivetrain
The LS1 Chevy engine came out of a ’00 Camaro, with a Lingenfelter aluminum intake added to the stock fuel injection setup. The custom air cleaner was built from 3-inch U-bend tubing and draws fresh air through K&N filters from vents in the radiator support. The very limited-edition (three sets) valve covers came from Hunters Automotive. Boesch fabricated the metal shroud for the 16-inch Vintage Air electric fan, and built a custom exhaust system connecting Street & Performance headers to Edelbrock mufflers. Since “everything should have a clutch,” according to Gary, his Vette runs the six-speed that came with the LS1. Rear gears are 4.10s with limited-slip.

Wheels & Tires
Dale Boesch designed the unique billet five-spokes, measuring 18×8 and 19×9, which were built by Victor and Jose at Intro Wheels. The 225/40R18 and 275/40R19 low-profile rubber is from Michelin’s Pilot Sport line.

Body & Paint
During the course of the many body modifications, the Corvette was transformed into a true custom as well as a true roadster. The door tops were reworked to mold into the dash, and the frame was removed from the stock windshield, which was lowered 3 inches into the corners of the cowl. The body was stripped of all trim, and the door handles were replaced with painted ’98 model pieces. The stock grille was retained with one extra tooth added. Smaller bumpers replace the stock items, and the openings below the headlights were eliminated. Quad blue-dot headlights from RB’s Obsolete were frenched and the stock taillight lenses were fitted flush to the body and tinted to disappear. The paint is DuPont single-stage Diamond Black. Contrasting bronze pearl with silver and lime green ‘striping was used to finish the engine and suspension.

Interior
When it was time to build the interior, the Corvette went to the Recovery Room in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, where Tracy Weever designed and created the custom seats, door panels, and dash inserts, covering them all in beautiful saddle-toned Ultraleather. The center console and dash were hand-fabricated from foam and fiberglass, following closely, but not exactly, the style of the original. Boesch built custom bezels for the rebuilt Classic Instruments gauges. The center dash emblem is from a C5 decklid. A Kugel clutch and brake pedal assembly was installed, and the leather panel at the top of the dash is removable for access to the brake booster and master cylinder.

The shot above was snapped at the garages of Pratt & Miller, the racing outfit contracted by GM to develop and run the racing Corvettes. As we can see, the color scheme is the same black and yellow, but the 2010 C6R has sharper paint job.

The bodywork is built based on an aluminum frame – for instance – the GT1′s frame is made of steel. The brakes are made of steel, too. The power unit of the muscle car is a downsized 5.5-liter V8.

We all hope that the Corvette Racing team is going to beat the competition, dominated by Ferraris and Porsches.

The limited edition 2008 Chevrolet Corvette was the last of 427 cars built specifically for North America and the only 2008 Z06 available in Crystal Red Metallic Tint Coat. Sporting a 7.0L V8 engine with 505 hp, the Corvette contains spider design chrome Z06 wheels, Z06 plates, a Stinger-style stripe on the front hood and fascia, chrome exterior badges and a painted Z06 spoiler and body color door handles. Inside, the Corvette contains a Dark Titanium leather-wrapped interior and special Crystal Red center trim plate.

All 427 of the limited edition Corvettes were signed and numbered in the center console area by Will Cooksey, the Corvette plant manager who retired in 2006 after 15 years running the plant. The Corvette also features “427″ hood badges and engine cover emblems and “427″ seat and floor mat embroidery.
The Corvette is Lot #1318 and will be auctioned on Saturday evening, Jan. 23, at the Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale, Ariz.
