Dave Strickler’s 1968 Camaro Z/28 “Old Reliable”

Automotive history lives and breathes at RK Motors Charlotte. You know we are passionate about vintage racing, having completely restored “Project Six Pack” to its original state, and more recently presenting the legendary Arlen Vankes 1967 HEMI Barracuda. Today we are pleased to announce yet another milestone race vehicle coming to us from one of the top names in the Camaro hobby. The car is Dave Sticklers 1968 Camaro Z/28 that won the 1968 Super Stock World Championship, and the man is Camaro historian and authenticity expert, Jerry MacNeish. The car has been comprehensively restored to as-raced condition, including some incredibly rare NOS items that came from Jerry’s personal collection. If there is a more thoroughly documented, well-known, relevant and accurate early Camaro out there, I’d like to see it. Make no mistake: this is the ultimate Z/28 and the cornerstone of any significant Chevrolet muscle collection.

Racing legend Dave Strickler dominated NHRA Super Stock racing during the 1968 season with this Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins-prepared Z/28 Camaro. Equipped with a stock intake manifold and carburetor, a stock hood, Stahl Headers, 5.38 gears, and nine-inch slicks, the “Old Reliable” ran elapsed times in the 11.70s at roughly 116 mph, which made it competitive with many big block Super Stock Camaros of the same time period. Its dominance culminated in two of Sticklers biggest wins: on Sunday, October 6, 1968, Strickler drove to a decisive victory over a stellar field at the NHRA Super Stock All-Star Meet at Englishtown Raceway Park. Two weeks later, he went on to capture the 1968 Super Stock World Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then the most prestigious S/S event on the NHRA calendar. Read more and see the gallery!

DETROIT – With supercar levels of performance and technology, the 580-horsepower (432-kW) Camaro ZL1 can reach 170 mph (273 km/h) on the famed Nürburgring’s Nordschleife course in Germany. To maintain stability and steering response at that speed, the ZL1 features an aerodynamic design that generates downforce to press the tires against the track.

“The Camaro ZL1 lapped the Nürburgring in an incredible 7:41.27 seconds, which would not have been possible without work of our aerodynamics team,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “The design of the ZL1 creates downforce like a race car, harnessing air pressure to press the tires against the track for extra grip and control at high speeds.”

Most production cars are designed with some lift at speed slip through the air for improved fuel economy. The Camaro LS and Camaro SS are no exceptions, enabling the Camaro LS to deliver 323 horsepower (241 kW) and up to 30 mpg on the highway.

Design for high-speed track capability takes in other considerations.

For the ZL1 – the fastest Camaro ever – the aerodynamics team set out to generate downforce for improved handing at speed while minimizing the amount of increased drag that could reduce fuel economy and the vehicle’s top speed. With the computer-assisted design recommendations, engineers tested full-scale clay models and full-size prototypes in the General Motors’ wind tunnel – shaping clay and trimming foam board by hand to affect changes and measure them immediately.

Outside of the aerodynamics laboratory, engineers tested the ZL1’s aero aids on GM’s Milford Road Course, other race tracks and the unique “rolling road” wind tunnel at the Auto Research Center in Indianapolis.

When the dust settled and the wind-tunnel blades came to a stop, the Camaro ZL1 produced 65 pounds of downforce at an equivalent 150 mph (241 km/h) – compared to 200 pounds of lift in a Camaro SS – which was offset by an increase of only 40 counts of additional aerodynamic drag. LAS VEGAS – For the second year in a row, the Chevrolet Camaro is the “hottest car” at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The SEMA Award recognizes the most accessory-friendly vehicle, based on the volume of aftermarket parts exhibited at the annual showcase of automotive performance and personalization.

The SEMA Award was first handed out in 2010, which not only makes Camaro a two-time winner, but the only car to receive the award. Its selection reflects the aftermarket industry’s enthusiasm and continued investment in America’s most popular sports car.

Camaro posted 6,119 sales in October, again leading the segment and topping the next-closest competitor nine of 10 months so far in 2011 – with sales up nearly 7 percent in the first 10 months of this year.

The Chevrolet Camaro you see in the adjacent image was tuned by West Coast Customs, with the vehicle having recently been offered for charity by Mecum Dallas.

According to Garage Style Magazine, the vehicle, a 2010 convertible, managed to raise $333,000, with the proceeds going to Operation Mend, a charity that includes the Ronald Reagan UCLA medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and the VA-Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and aims to treat US Army members that were severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As you can see, the vehicle’s list of exterior mods includes goodies such as a glamouflage theme, a front lip, custom side skirts with air intakes, as well as a set of generously-sized chromed rims. Read more and see images!

DETROIT – The 2012 Camaro ZL1 recently recorded a 7:41.27 lap at the Nurburgring. That is nearly 40 seconds quicker than a Camaro SS tested at the legendary German track in 2009. Measuring 12.9 miles (20.8 km) and including some 154 turns, the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife (“north loop”) is widely considered the world’s most-demanding course.

The Camaro ZL1 used for the lap was a production-intent model, with no performance modifications, driven by Camaro Performance Engineer Aaron Link. The Camaro ZL1 recorded its time of 7:41.27 from a flying start.

“The Nurburgring is unlike any track in the world,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Each lap includes fast straights, sweeping off-camber turns, hairpin corners, and elevation changes. In order to do well on the ‘Ring, the car has to do everything well – including acceleration, braking, and lateral grip. Breaking an eight-minute lap in a 2+2 production car is a tremendous accomplishment, and validates that the Camaro ZL1 will truly be track-ready from the showroom.”

Nearly 125,000 Chevrolet fans have spoken, naming the 1969 Camaro the “Best Chevy of All Time.”

As part of Chevrolet’s Centennial celebration, fans were asked to vote for their favorite vehicle from Chevrolet’s 100-year history. During the four-round, elimination bracket, the 1969 Camaro garnered 25,058 of the 124,368 votes cast, edging out the 1970 Chevelle SS in the final round.

Tom Peters, Chevrolet Design director, believes the ’69 Camaro is not only one of the best vehicles in Chevrolet’s history but one of the best vehicles ever. He is a little biased, however, having owned the same 1969 Camaro for nearly 20 years.

“I can vividly remember seeing one for the first time as a kid,” Peters said. “The intent of the Camaro was instantly understood, even to a 14-year old like me, because it possessed a very powerful personality and an elegant, simple design.
