Whether a driver is a track-day veteran or getting his first ultra-high-performance sports car, the new launch control system on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will help ensure he gets smooth, consistent and fast starts every time.

Uncontrolled wheel spin is generally undesirable, whether commuting to work or racing away from the Christmas tree on a Friday night at the drag strip. Both safety and performance suffer when the wheels can’t get enough grip on the road. However, properly regulated, some wheel slip can be your friend.

“Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction control system that integrates the brake and engine management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve in order to achieve maximum thrust,” explains John Pfeiffer, senior engineer, SVT Vehicle Engineering. “With so much more power and torque on tap from the new 5.8-liter V8, launch control makes it easier for drivers to take advantage of the performance.”

With launch control enabled, the driver just has to press the accelerator pedal to the floor and then smoothly and quickly release the clutch pedal just as he normally would when executing a clean start. The difference is that the electronics will automatically hold the engine steady at the desired speed and manage the rear brakes to allow the optimum amount of wheel slip for maximum traction. “We recognize not every driver has the same style, and surface, tire and climate conditions vary,” said Eddie Khan, SVT Engineering supervisor. “Most of our competitors’ launch control systems have a fixed engine launch speed. We’ve given Shelby GT500 drivers the ability to adjust the engine speed to achieve best and most consistent performance, no matter where and when they drive.”

Shelby GT500 drivers can enable launch control in two ways – either through Track Apps™ on the 4.2-inch LCD in the instrument cluster or simply by tapping a switch on the left side of the instrument panel. When using the Track Apps screen, drivers can also adjust the desired engine speed for the launch in 100 rpm increments from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm. When first getting accustomed to launch control or if the pavement is cooler, a lower speed may be more appropriate. Switching to racing tires or running in an autocross event on a warm Saturday morning may call for a launch speed closer to the upper end of the range.

Once the desired engine speed has been set, launch control can be toggled on or off by tapping the instrument panel switch – more convenient than the intricate multistep process required on many other vehicles. After the launch control has been enabled or disabled, it retains that mode even after the engine has been switched off and restarted, something drag racers frequently have to do as they slowly make their way through the lines to the next quarter-mile pass.

“We developed this system to enable 90 percent of drivers to be able to achieve very fast, smooth and consistent starts with the Shelby GT500 regardless of their skill level,” said Khan. “Experienced drag racers may be able to get away slightly quicker, but chances are they won’t be as consistent.”

Veteran drag racers will find the Shelby GT500 also gives them extra flexibility. Switching off the traction control while the launch control is on produces an rpm-only mode that engine calibration engineer Tom Siebyla has tuned to keep the engine speed rock-steady with the electronic throttle and ignition without scrubbing off any speed with the brakes. Autocrossers or track-day racers can also mix and match the normal, sport and off modes of the stability control with the launch control to achieve the degree of sliding or control that best suits the conditions or their personal driving style.

For those times when there isn’t enough grip to use launch control effectively, such as dust or moisture on the pavement, Ford electronic brake control development engineer Dan Dunn has built smarts into the launch control that enable it to automatically switch off and revert to traction control.

“It’s not as intrusive as some TC systems have been in the past,” added Khan. “We wanted to help the driver make consistent starts without getting in the way.”

Launch control won’t do the driving, but it is a tool to help drivers extract consistent high performance from the most powerful production Mustang ever.

“For drivers who want to have some fun at their local drag strip with a stock machine, the 2013 Shelby GT500 is the ultimate bracket racer,” said Khan. “We’ve given our drivers the ability to exert control over all the power and torque this Mustang can produce.”

DEARBORN, Mich., May 11, 2012– Carroll Shelby was a member of the Ford family for the better part of 60 years, producing stunning performance vehicles from concepts to production models.

He once said his energy and passion for performance products were always strongest when he was working with Ford.

Shelby most recently collaborated with the company on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, the most powerful production V8 in the world. Working with SVT engineers at Sebring and the Arizona Proving Grounds, at times he drove for more than eight hours – at the ripe old age of 88. He was having so much fun, he didn’t want to stop.

In this 110th Anniversary of Ford Racing video, Shelby talks about his career working with Ford and winning Le Mans:

The legend begins
Carroll Shelby was nearly 30 years old before he entered his first car race – a quarter-mile drag meet in 1952. The hot rod he drove to the finish line that day was powered by a Ford V8.

Shelby’s first Ford derivatives were the legendary Cobras and Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s. He was heavily involved in the design and engineering of the Ford Shelby Cobra Concept car unveiled in 2004, and was a key member of the dream team that built the 2005 Ford GT.

Carroll Shelby may have gotten a late start, but he was a winner from the beginning. Just two years into his driving career, Aston Martin racing manager John Wyer recruited him to co-drive a DB3 at Sebring. Within months, the chicken farmer from Texas was bumping elbows and trading paint with the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill and Paul Frère. Driving an Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori, he won Europe’s prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959.

Early in 1962 Shelby drove his second Ford-powered race car. It was the first mockup for the Cobra, Shelby’s now-legendary marriage of a lightweight British roadster body with a small-block Ford V8. By January 1963 he had homologated the car under the FIA’s GT Group III class, and that month a Cobra won its first race, beating a field of Corvette Stingrays at Riverside in California.

In January 1965 Ford hired Shelby to lend his expertise to the GT40 campaign. Three cars had run the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, but none finished. Shelby began installing the more reliable 7-liter stock car engine in what would come to be known as the GT40 Mark II. It proved considerably faster than the Mark I, and in just two seasons became a strong contender.In 1966 the GT40 began a domination of endurance car racing that would last for four years.

While Ford and Shelby took on Ferrari at Le Mans, at home they fought Corvette. The first effort was the legendary Shelby Cobra, a Ford-powered, Shelby-engineered derivative of the AC Ace. The car had a one-ton weight advantage over the Corvette.

Shelby Mustang
In August 1964 Ford had asked Carroll Shelby to develop a street-legal, high-performance Mustang to compete against Corvette in SCCA B-production road racing. By September, California-based Shelby-American had completed the first Mustang GT350.

The 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 was a fastback production model with a functional scoop in its fiberglass hood and 306 horsepower from its 289-cubic-inch V8 – an increase of 35 horsepower over the stock engine. Suspension upgrades included a larger front stabilizer bar, Koni shocks and rear traction bars, along with race-ready features. It sold for $4,000, and was instantly recognizable by its Wimbledon White paint and blue GT350 side stripes.

For 1966 the GT350 came in white, red, black, green and blue, and Hertz purchased nearly 1,000 special GT350H weekend “rent-a-racers.” In 1967 Shelby Mustangs sported unique fiberglass bodywork that extended the front end with an aggressive dual scoop and finished the trunk lid with an integrated spoiler.

But most important in 1967 was the new GT500, a big-block with 355 horsepower. More than 2,000 of those 428-cubic-inch Mustangs were delivered that first model year.

1968 was when the name “Cobra” was first officially used on a Shelby Mustang, and that year a convertible bodystyle became available as well. Although the Shelby Cobra GT350 was essentially unchanged, later GT500s were powered by the new Cobra Jet 428 engine and thus became GT500KR – for King of the Road.

For 1969, the penultimate year of the Shelby Mustang, engine choices included the optional 351 Ram Air, and the bodywork incorporated a total of nine scoops – five on the hood, one at the front of each fender and one on each quarter panel. In 1970, with sales slowing, the final Shelby Mustangs built for 1969 were updated to 1970 spec and sold. The famed run had come to an end.

It would be more than 30 years before Ford and Shelby worked together again, and in March 2001 they reunited, with Shelby coming on board to consult on a new GT40 Concept. In March 2002 Ford green-lighted production of the Ford GT. Then, in April 2003 Shelby collaborated on a concept car that would pay homage to the original Shelby Cobra. The car stole the show the following year at NAIAS.

Ford stoked the passions of enthusiasts again in 2004 with the unveiling of the modern Ford Shelby GR-1 Concept at Pebble Beach. J Mays, Ford group vice president for Design, said Shelby’s input was reflected in the car’s performance underpinnings.

In 2008, Carroll Shelby’s 85th birthday was marked by the first 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR to roll off the production line. An exclusive run of only 1,000 units, this King of the Road was a 540-horsepower muscle car. Shelby, who was actively involved in developing it, said, “I’m always looking to up the ante when it comes to performance, and bringing back the King of the Road Mustang is just what we need.”

Carroll Shelby’s last collaboration with Ford was on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, which produces 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 engine in the world. In January, Shelby’s one-of-one racetrack durability car was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Ariz., for $350,000.

2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 - 600 HP Custom Convertible

 

This will be the 23rd time a Chevrolet has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the 11th time a Corvette is serving as the Pace Car. Both are event records. The 2013 model year will mark the 60th anniversary and the final year of production for the current generation Corvette.

“Corvette embodies pure performance, so the ZR1 is a perfect car to pace the most prestigious auto race in the world,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. “Chevrolet is a great partner of the Speedway, and we share in the excitement of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the iconic Corvette brand. It’s even more meaningful to see a Chevrolet pacing the field at Indy since Chevy has returned as an engine supplier for the IZOD IndyCar Series for the first time since 2005.”

A supercharged, 6.2-liter LS9 engine generating 638 horsepower helps to create the ZR1’s performance. Of all mass-production companies, Chevrolet is the leader in using carbon fiber. The lightweight material is used for structural components, including the front fenders, hood, roof, front splitter, rocker panels and floor pans. With a curb weight of 3,353 pounds, the ZR1 features a power-to-weight ratio of just 5.2 pounds per horsepower. The ZR1 also features advanced technology such as Magnetic Selective Ride Control, Launch Control system with Performance Track Management, a four-channel ABS system and Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brake rotors.

As a result, the ZR1 is the fastest Chevrolet ever produced, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and capable of reaching a top speed of 205 mph. The ZR1 lapped the famed Nurburgring’ Nordschleife (“north loop”) in 7:19.63.

Corvette 60th Anniversary Package

The Corvette Pace Car features an exterior paint scheme and full body length stripe similar to that of the 60th Anniversary Package being made available on all 2013 Corvette models. The 60th Anniversary Package features an Arctic White exterior with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior with suede accents. Convertible models will have a blue top.

Additional content includes a ZR1-style rear spoiler, special badging, gray-painted brake calipers and the “60th” logo on the wheel center caps, steering wheel and seat headrests. An optional graphics package adds full-length racing stripes in Pearl Silver Blue, including a tonal stripe stitched into the convertible top, extending the graphic theme over the roof.

For 2013, all Corvettes will feature 60th Anniversary badges on the fascias and the “waterfall” panel on convertible models, as well as 60th logos in the instrument panel gauge cluster and on the sill plates.

Tyre Safety Month took place in October 2011 in the UK, and featured a number of special events and promotions designed to get drivers thinking about the condition their tyres are in and how to improve them.

Throughout October, motoring organisations highlighted the benefits of keeping tyres pumped up to the recommended level, not least of which is significantly improved fuel consumption – helping motorists to save money on fuel which can go towards other essentials such as car insurance renewal.

Campaign organisation TyreSafe notes that driving on tyres that are just ten psi under the manufacturer’s recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by as much as 2.5 per cent, a cost that will mount up over time if it is ignored for months.

“Checking tyre pressure is a straightforward procedure, yet many drivers simply don’t make time for it,” said Rob Beddis of TyreSafe.

“By taking just a few minutes every month to check the pressure of each tyre and adjust it to the recommended level, significant improvements to road safety will be made.”

How should I check if my tyre pressure is correct?

Pressure is measured by calculating the amount of air that has been pumped into the inner lining of your tyres and is measured in pounds force (psi) or bar pressure.

It’s not always obvious that tyre pressure is being lost and motorists may not feel the difference when they drive to begin with, but around two pounds of air is expected to be lost from tyres every month, or more in warm weather.

Your vehicle’s recommended tyre pressure can be found within the vehicle’s handbook or among the technical information on the passenger door frame or fuel tank flap, and can be checked quite easily with a tyre pressure gauge, available from most garages or repair shops.

Simply place the attachment onto the valve of each tyre, lock it into position and make a note of the reading on the gauge.

It is important only to check your tyre pressure when they have cooled down after a journey and avoid choosing a warm day to carry out the procedure, as checking the pressure of warm tyres is likely to give inaccurate results.

What are the other benefits of maintaining my tyres?

As well as saving money on fuel, now one of the biggest costs facing car insurance customers, drivers will also improve safety and reduce their impact on the environment by keeping tyres at the correct pressure.

Properly inflated tyres will help the vehicle to handle optimally, giving you greater control over your driving, while the enhanced fuel consumption means less CO2 being expelled into the air.

There’s also another very good reason to keep your tyres in check – it’s the law! In 2010, more than 10,000 motorists were convicted for driving on illegal or defective tyres, nearly 1,000 more than the previous year.

Not only will these convictions give you points on your license, they could also raise your car insurance premiums by a considerable amount.

“The authorities are taking a robust stance against motorists prepared to flout the law, which goes to show that if you drive on illegal tyres, then be prepared to pay the price,” add Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.

October’s Tyre Safety Month was helped to reach more people near the end of the month, when the BBC’s The One Show featured a special five-minute report on checking tread depth to ensure tyres are fit for the job.

HERE IS SOME HISTORY OF THE FACTORY-BUILT ’72 CHALLENGER CONVERTIBLES:
Everyone knows the last year for the E-body convertible was 1971. Right? Well, technically, it was. However, that’s not to say no 1972 E-body convertibles exist…because they do! The cars you see before you are factory authorized 1972 conversion Challenger convertibles, and they have a rather interesting story.

Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, Chrysler supplied a number of new cars to Hollywood motive and television studios. This arrangement made good business sense by placing Chrysler’s product (cars in front of the buying public’s eye for a lot less money than buying expensive commercial air time. The cost was relatively cheap, and sometimes, once the studios were done with them, the cars could be sold to the public through local dealerships. It was a very good program – one that the other car companies did as well.

Ford supplied cars to the “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Green Acres”. Pontiac took care of Major Nelson’s driving chores in “I Dream of Jeannie”, and other G.M. products turned up on a host of weekly T.V. programs. Chrysler Corporation had one of the largest deals going with the studios, supplying vehicles for “The Beverly Hillbillies”, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E”, “The Brady Bunch”, “Mannix”, “The Doris Day Show”, “The Mod Squad”, and many others. Remember how Mrs. Jane always seemed to drive a new red convertible? It wasn’t her salary working from a bank buying all those cars (Mr. Drysdale was too cheap for that), it was Chrsyler grabbing some free T.V. time for each new year’s models.

The arrangement was for the factory to supply new models each year to replace the old cars from the last season, allowing Chrysler to show off its very latest models. Many of the shows featured convertibles – remember Mr. Brady’s B-5 Blue Barracuda convertible used in the 1970 and ’71 seasons?

Among the most popular models with the T.V. crews were the E-body drop tops which were used in a number of shows in 1970 and 1971. Even with all this prime time exposure, convertible sales in the Chrysler showrooms were so disappointing that, after only two years of production, the factory gave up on the E-body convertible, and really, the whole E-body platform. The decision to axe the convertible from the ’72 line-up was not popular with Chrysler’s Move and T.V. Car Unit handling the cars in California. Just because no convertibles were to be built in 1972 did not mean convertibles were no longer needed for television work.

A decision had to be made as to what to do for the upcoming T.V. season. Should the ’71 models be left in use? If they were, it would mean that for the first time, Chrysler would be showing off models no longer available. Or, Chrysler could simply update some ‘71s to appear as 1972 models. Either way, they would still be highlighting a model not available. Faced with the lesser of two evils, the factory chose the latter. Thus were born a handful of 1972 Barracuda and Challenger convertibles.

1971 Dodge Challenger 340 Convertible MOD SQUAD

 

This is a chance to own a piece of Mopar history. As history dictates, Dodge was to build 500 of these examples to allow them to enter Nascar Racing. Although the true number of these cars built is debatable, this one was chosen by no other than Joey Arrington of Arrington engines of Martinsville, VA.

Here are the words of the owner: “The guru of Mopar, Galen Govier, saw my car at a car show in Cornwall, Ontario, and remembered it as Joey’s car. He registered her in the Chrysler registry for me. Joey’s father, Buddy Arrington, raced these cars in the 60s and 70s, and he was on hand to sign the car and do a photo opt. Read more!

Joey had the Charger undergo a body-off, nut and bolt restoration with a restomod twist. Painted in a Brilliant Silver color only to be outdone by a perfect Legendary all leather interior. Of course, a 528 Crate HEMI was the engine of his choice. Custom built Elston headers and a 3″ stainless Borla exhaust system help this beast breath.

Transmission: ATI 727 Automatic custom Competition with a 10″ 3500 stall converter. Electric fuel pump with stainless lines. Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes and lines by Fine Lines. Suspension by Firm Feel.

Wheel Vintique 17″ replicas of the magnum wheels, shod with 225-35 ZR/17 Michelin Sport front and 235-45 ZR/17 rears. Dana 60 sure grip rear end.

Over the past few years, I added the following modifications:

For comfort, I custom installed Chrysler 300 SRT-8 electric front seats with a custom fitted rear bench seat with an armrest and cup holders. Flaming River “Waterfall” steering wheel. Alpine cd sound system.

Now for the engine: The block was shaved for a 10.8:1 compression ratio with Diamond pistons. Ray Barton 800 cfm stage V heads matched to Edelbrock’s stage V dual carb intake with 2 650 cfm carbs and a K&N air filter atop. A custom dual core aluminum radiator with dual electric fans and one Flexfan on the motor. Never overheats. To keep the revs down, I swapped the Dana 60 4.10 rear for a Dana 60 3.54 and a Gear Vendors overdrive and heavy duty driveshaft. Custom Vintage Autometer guages replaced the new Dodge guages. The engine now puts out on the dyno 830 hp and 737 lb.ft. of torque as seen on the video.

At 662 HP, 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Certified As World’s Most Powerful V8! Segment-Leading Fuel Efficiency

The all-new supercharged 5.8-liter powerplant in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially SAE-certified as the most powerful series production V8 in the world with peak output of 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s more power and torque than low volume sports cars costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the GT500, which is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its segment. In fact the 2013 GT500 is the most fuel-efficient car with over 550 horsepower in any segment available in America. Read more!

Unlike high-strung engines found in much more expensive exotic supercars, the GT500 engine generates its massive thrust throughout its operating range with 395 lb.-ft. of torque available just off idle at 1,000 rpm. More than 90 percent of the peak torque is available from 2,200 to 5,800 rpm so that no matter when you squeeze the go pedal, the GT500 will just get up and run.

The combination of the new TVS 2.3-liter supercharger, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder ensures this stallion can breathe all the way to 7,000 rpm with the peak power production coming at 6,500 rpm and holding fairly steady right to the rev limit.

“Our goal is to create outstanding all-around performance cars, not just stoplight-to-stoplight sprinters,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “We’ve backed up this amazing powerplant with a more refined chassis tuning that helps keep the rubber on the pavement without punishing the driver’s spine and six-pot Brembo brakes that dissipate speed with ease stop after stop.”

The broad, flat torque curve of the GT500 engine makes it tractable and easy to drive whether trolling along in traffic or powering out of a turn on a twisting country road. With more than enough grunt to push the coupe to 200 mph and beyond, the chassis has been tuned to absorb the road imperfections that can cause instability at high speeds. The revised front fascia and splitter help manage the flow of air around and under the GT500 so that it offers 33 percent more effective aero loading at 160 mph compared to the 2011 model and feels more firmly planted.

“The engineers at Ford SVT focused on the fundamentals first with solid mechanical grip and strong brakes,” added Hameedi. “On top of that platform they added advanced driver-adjustable electronic assist features including launch control, Bilstein adjustable damping, AdvanceTrac stability control and electric power-assisted steering.”

Even with the most powerful production V8 in the world, the 2013 Shelby GT500 improves on the fuel efficiency of the 2012 model with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with no gas guzzler tax. That’s 5 mpg better on the highway than the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 even with an extra 82 horsepower and 75 lb.-ft. being generated under the hood. With the 2013 GT500 world-class performance no longer has to mean a world-class thirst for fuel.

According to Steve Saleen, the Parnelli Jones 302 was designed to capture the raw, aggressive attitude with which Parnelli raced; therefore, you could order any color car you wanted so long as it was Grabber Orange. Naturally, since this is an essentially new car, the paint looks simply amazing and has barely even seen sunlight, much less rain or inclement weather. Get up close to the panels and you’ll find a sea of pristine, wet looking orange paint that doesn’t display any of the buff marks, blemishes and haze that are typical of even expertly detailed show cars. Fit and finish is exceptional, thanks to the largely hand-built nature of the custom Saleen add-ons. And despite performing everyday tasks as flawlessly as a stock Mustang, the car has been completely re-envisioned to incorporate many subtle tweaks which recall the glory days of Trans Am racing.

To create that road ready, Trans Am racer appearance, Saleen equipped the Parnelli Jones 302 with every cosmetic trick in their book. At the front of the car, a re-designed front bumper cover hangs a chrome trimmed grille and injection molded headlight dividers above a black serial number and racing style air dam. Behind that bumper, a black striped and fully functional shaker hood holds race derived hood pins, which still carry their factory plastic covers, in front of excellent looking satin finished “S302″ emblems. At the sides of the car, ornamentation is kept to a minimum with black 302 side stripes, a Saleen branded billet racing style gas cap and static cling door roundels, which feature Parnellis legendary number 15, providing the only breaks in the cars paint. And Fords classic Mustang profile is augmented by aggressive Saleen side skirts and throwback C-pillar vents which recall classic Shelbys of the 1960s. At the back of the car, a louvered, satin black rear window visor sits above a traditional Saleen championship decal, and a satin black trunk deck props a clean ’70 Boss replica wing. Below that wing, a custom chrome trimmed rear valence displays both a custom Saleen Parnelli Jones emblem and a traditional Ford emblem, and a custom rear bumper weaves a black splitter around pristine stainless exhaust tips.

Lift Parnelli Jones #87s custom shaker hood and you’ll find a crisp new 302 cubic inch Saleen built SOHC three valve V8 which produces an SAE certified 400 horsepower and 390 lb./ft. of torque. Equipped with a high compression, high revving valve train, this blue printed small block V8 utilizes a lightweight aluminum flywheel, a Saleen spec forged and internally balanced American crank, forged 4340 H-beam American rods, forged pistons, hand ported heads, Saleen spec Comp Cams with matching valve springs, Saleen spec variable cam timing and a Saleen PowerFlash tune to provide thrilling acceleration all the way up to its 7000 RPM redline. The hand assembled block sees a bump in displacement thanks to an increased stroke and little details like bore honing, a billet harmonic balancer, Saleen pulleys, new cylinder head bolts and Fel-Pro gaskets ensure the OEM reliability that goes hand in hand with a new car. What that means for you is a rocket-like sprint to triple digit speeds from an engine that never seems to feel like it’s out of breath. And, like the legendary Trans Am Fords it honors, this car doesn’t carry the imbalanced weight and mechanical stigma of having a big engine shoehorned into a tight engine bay. The pristine small block fits naturally between the cars glossy Grabber Orange fenders and presents a factory fresh appearance with no grease or renegade fluids anywhere to be found. It’s exceptionally clean, nothing is out of place and there is absolutely no dirt or other signs of wear and tear.

In keeping with both Steve Saleen and Parnelli Jones race ancestry, this limited edition Mustang was designed utilizing Saleens own precision suspension. The all new, yet classic Watts-Link suspension is derived from racing and performance applications, and offers the purest race handling found in any OEM street car. Behind small block engine, a rugged Tremec 5-speed manual transmission drives a tall 3.73 rear end, which makes for some spectacular wheel spin in first and second gear, and astounding acceleration when you get the launch just right. Years ago, Saleens were criticized for their harsh ride, but those days are long gone. Taking advantage of the new Mustang’s more rigid Macpherson front and 3 link rear chassis, Saleen engineers carefully chose springs, shocks, and sway bars that improve responsiveness without sacrificing ride quality. In fact, this may be the greatest improvement granted by the new Mustang platform: the ability to corner and handle like a thoroughbred without the hammering of previous performance suspensions. Exhaust is expelled through a traditional Saleen stainless steel system that provides their legacy low resonating sound. And braking is handled by “Saleen” branded four piston front calipers which clamp large slotted rotors and OEM Ford rear calipers which squeeze original factory rotors. Inside, Saleen makes the Ford interior its own with leather upholstery and plenty of signage. Cars have evolved rapidly in the last five years. They are becoming more responsive, interactive and self-aware. The days of needing a map to get around town are long gone. Improved technology will help drivers get where they are going faster and safer than ever before.

“There are two ways to reduce energy use in vehicles: improving the conversion efficiency of fuels to motion and reducing the amount of work that powertrains need to do,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford chief technical officer and vice president, Research and Innovation. “Ford is tackling the conversion problem primarily through downsizing engines with EcoBoost® and electrification while mass reduction and improved aerodynamics are keys to reducing the workload.”

Ford is investigating a range of new materials, enhanced design processes and new manufacturing techniques that would enable automotive structures to meet increasingly stringent safety and quality standards while cutting weight. Read more!

“Vehicle weight reduction for our customers through intelligent design with a materials focus has been a priority for Dow Automotive Systems,” said Florian Schattenmann, director of Research and Development for Dow Automotive Systems. “This partnership with Ford on carbon fiber composites is a logical next step to progress already achieved through the use of lightweight, high-strength polymers and structural bonding technology.”

Carbon fiber composites have been used in aerospace and racing cars for decades due to their unique combination of high strength and low mass. Until recently these materials have been far too costly for use in high-volume mainstream applications.

Dow Automotive Systems and Ford have signed a joint development agreement that will see researchers from the two companies collaborate on several fronts. The development teams will focus on establishing an economical source of automotive-grade carbon fiber and develop component manufacturing methods for high-volume automotive applications.

The partnership will seek to combine the best of Ford’s capabilities and experience in design, engineering and high-volume vehicle production with Dow Automotive’s strengths in R&D, materials science and high-volume polymer processing.

“Reducing weight will benefit the efficiency of every Ford vehicle,” added Mascarenas. “However, it’s particularly critical to improving the range of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.”

The joint development effort will also leverage work that The Dow Chemical Company has already begun through partnerships with Turkish carbon fiber manufacturer AKSA and the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

If the joint development effort is successful, carbon fiber components may begin appearing on new Ford vehicles in the latter part of this decade as product development teams work toward meeting new fuel efficiency standards of more than 50 mpg and extending the range of plug-in vehicles.

For 2013, all Camaro SS models including the 1LE will feature standard variable-effort electric power steering and an available dual-mode exhaust system. Both features were introduced on the ZL1. Additionally, 2013 Camaro LT, SS and ZL1 models are available with Chevrolet’s color touch radio with MyLink infotainment system.

“With the 2013 model year, Camaro offers something for almost every driver, including: the 323-horsepower, 30-mpg 2LS; the all-new, 580-horsepower supercharged ZL1 convertible; the COPO Camaro for drag-racing; and the new 1LE for amateur track days,” said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro marketing manager. “We expect the range of choices, and enhancements for 2013, will help Camaro remain America’s most-popular sports car.”

Camaro sales were up nearly 20 percent for the first two months of the year, building on an 8.5-percent gain for all of 2011. The 1LE package goes on sale this fall with the 2013 Camaro line. Pricing will be released later this year.

A heritage of handling

The Camaro 1LE package was introduced in 1988, inspired by Camaro’s involvement in Pro-Am road racing.

For 2013, the 1LE package is offered only on 1SS and 2SS coupe models, featuring a 6.2L LS3 V-8, which is rated at 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb-ft of torque (569 Nm). In addition, 1LE is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

While the Camaro SS features a Tremec TR6060-M10 for all-around performance, the Camaro 1LE features an exclusive Tremec TR6060-MM6. Paired with a numerically higher 3.91 final-drive ratio, the close-ratio gearing of the transmission is tuned for road-racing performance. As with the ZL1, the 1LE transmission features a standard air-to-liquid cooling system for track use.

The 1LE also features exclusive, monotube rear dampers instead of the twin-tube dampers on SS models. The new hardware allowed engineers to tune the 1LE suspension to focus on optimal body-motion control while preserving much of the ride quality and wheel-motion control of the Camaro SS.

Other changes to optimize the 1LE for track-day use include:
- Larger, 27-mm solid front stabilizer bar, and 28-mm solid rear stabilizer bar for improved body control
- Higher-capacity rear-axle half shafts to cope with increased levels of traction
- Strut tower brace for improved steering feel and response
- ZL1-based 20 x 10-inch front and 20 x 11-inch aluminum wheels
- 285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle Supercar G:2 tires front and rear (identical to the front tires for ZL1)
- ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and rear shock mounts for improved on-track performance
- ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump and additional fuel pickups for improved fuel delivery during high-cornering

Visually, the 1LE package for 2013 is distinguished by its matte-black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler – as well as the 10-spoke ZL1-based wheels, which are finished in black. The functional front splitter and rear spoiler contribute to the car’s on-track performance by helping to reduce aerodynamic lift at high speeds.

Inside, the 1LE package incorporates the ZL1’s flat-bottom steering wheel, trimmed in sueded-microfiber and designed for easier heel-and-toe driving on the racetrack. The quick-acting, short-throw shifter from the ZL1 is also trimmed in sueded microfiber.

Electric power steering and dual-mode exhaust bring ZL1 technology to SS models

All 2013 Camaro SS models, including the 1LE, will benefit from performance technologies that debuted on the 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1.

The improvements began in 2012, when all SS Coupes incorporated the ZL1-derived chassis element: Stabilizer bars with drop links repositioned outboard of the control arms. This made the stabilizer bars four times more effective than in previous models, for improved control of body roll and crisper response to steering input.

New for 2013, the electric power steering system developed for the ZL1 will be standard on all 2013 SS models. The variable ratio, variable effort system provides light efforts for easy maneuverability at parking-lot speeds as well as increased resistance at higher speeds. This provides more feedback, and a more direct steering feel, to the driver.

Also new for 2013 is an available dual-mode exhaust system, available on Camaro SS models with the LS3 V8 engine and six-speed manual transmissions. Similar to the systems found on the ZL1 and Corvette models, this vacuum-actuated system provides a quieter driving experience at low engine speeds and a more aggressive sound at high engine speeds.

The Shelby 1000 will be offered in both a street and a Shelby 1000 S/C “off-road” track version. The street legal, pump gas version dyno’s out at approximately 950 HP, while the track oriented S/C edition is rated at over 1,100 HP.

Flanking the center of the Dodge Challenger Rallye Redline’s performance hood scoops, roof and deck lid is its signature Redline Red stripe with two thin side stripes for added detail. The new 2012 Dodge Challenger Rallye Redline combines world-class ride and refinement with its 305 horsepower aluminum Pentastar V-6 engine and track-tuned performance suspension to deliver a thrilling driving experience.

The Dodge Challenger’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine features a cold-air induction system and dual exhausts from the headers back to the exhaust tips for maximum output. The result is 305 track-ready horsepower (227 kW) at 6,350 rpm and a responsive 268 lb.-ft. (363 N•m) of torque at 4,800 rpm. In 1964 Ford let the first Mustang come into the world. The model took its place quickly as an alternative to already legendary Thunderbird and became an ancestor to a new generation of the Pony-Car Class. Through different intermediate states and countless niche models and at last we came up to the Mustang V, a model created in 2004.

In this article we will speak about this kind of V8-daredevil with 4.6 L engine capacity and 309 kW. In order to significantly improve the Optics of the advanced Retro-Design vehicle that belonged to the popular movie stars for a long time, we installed the Cervini-Bodykit for 8,000 Euro. We also installed a specially featured exhaust system which included side pipes at both ends to ensure the smooth operation of the hard bar. Moreover, this tomboy is equipped with KW-coilovers with electrically lifting axles and HLS (Hydraulic Lift System) Kit, which solved such well-known problems caused by its smaller ground clearance as emissions on the roadway, problem garage entry and covered parking entry and also problems with so-called speed-blocker. Dodge Charger Race Car For 2013 Sprint Cup Series Unveiled At LVMS

LAS VEGAS (Sunday, March 11, 2012) – Fans asked for it. NASCAR agreed. SRT Motorsports and Dodge delivered. SRT Motorsports unveiled the 2013 Dodge Charger that will compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series next season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway today in front of the people that asked for the change — the fans. Just as they did with the Dodge Challenger when it was introduced in the NASCAR Nationwide Series two years ago, SRT Motorsports designers and engineers created a race car fans will have no problem identifying on the race track. “From the start, it’s been a collaborative effort with NASCAR,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT Brand and Motorsports. “NASCAR provided the manufacturers with basic specifications, but offered encouragement to venture beyond the look of the current race car. NASCAR eased rules on where manufacturers could put glass and solid body pieces. That freed designers and engineers to make the “greenhouse,” the area above the doors, hood and truck lid, more closely resemble production cars. Rules were also eased for the front and rear, and especially the sides, allowing the character lines that come directly from the street car.

“We know NASCAR fans are passionate about cars,” said NASCAR President Mike Helton. “We’re excited about the results of the collective efforts of NASCAR, Dodge and the other manufacturers to create the 2013 Sprint Cup cars. The 2013 Dodge Charger race car design is a great example of what we look forward to seeing on the race track next season. We thank Dodge and all the manufacturers for their efforts, as we see the results here today with the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Dodge Charger.”

The relationship between the Dodge Charger street car and the Dodge Charger race car is unmistakable.

“The race fans delivered a clear message,” said Gilles. “NASCAR listened. We went to work, following the guidelines established for all manufacturers by NASCAR. The Dodge Charger revealed today validates our resolve to deliver a product that will be easily identifiable on the track without compromise in the area of competition.”

As such, the COPO Camaros are expected to be the quickest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet.

“The COPO Camaro is going to shake up the sportsman drag racing ranks this summer and give Chevy fans a great new reason to cheer on the Bowtie,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles & Motorsports. “COPO builds off the strengths that have made the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America. And while it was developed strictly for the drag strip, the COPO Camaro is infused with the same performance pedigree that every Camaro shares.”

The 69-car production for the 2012 COPO Camaro matches the number of “ZL-1” COPO Camaros made in 1969. COPO stands for Central Office Production Order and was Chevrolet’s special-order system in used by dealers to build high-performance models in the 1960s. Read more!

The new COPO Camaros will be built using factory “body-in-white” body structures produced at the Oshawa, Ontario plant that manufactures regular-production Camaros. They are the same body-in-white body shells available to all racers under Chevrolet Performance part number 19243374.

Customers will order and complete the transaction for their COPO Camaro at their preferred Chevrolet dealer with delivery at the General Motors Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich.

Deliveries will begin early this summer.

The COPO Camaro concept was first shown at the 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, where the overwhelming response by more than 2,000 racing enthusiasts shaped the decision to produce a limited number of COPO Camaros.

To ensure fair access to the limited number of COPO Camaros, an independent third party was used to identify the first individuals who would be offered the opportunity to buy one of the new COPO Camaros. Those selected will receive a confirmation letter with instructions on how to fulfill the purchase contract, choose the engine option for their intended racing class, and take delivery.

Designed to win

The COPO Camaro is designed to NHRA racing specifications including a solid axle and a full chrome moly roll cage. Inside, most of the standard sound deadening and power accessories have been deleted in order to optimize weight for NHRA racing. Also included is a pair of racing bucket seats (no rear seat), a safety harness for the driver, a competition floor shifter and Chevrolet Performance gauges.

The three engines offered in the COPO Camaro program were developed to align with the top classes in NHRA’s various Stock Eliminator and Super Stock ranks. They are:

• An LS7-based naturally aspirated 427 (7.0L) V-8
• A supercharged, LSX-based 327 (5.3L) V-8 featuring a 2.9L supercharger
• A supercharged, LSX-based 327 (5.3L) V-8 featuring a 4.0L supercharger

The 2012 COPO Camaro is being offered as a performance part, with a specific part number (P/N 20129562). It cannot be registered, titled, licensed, or driven on public roads or highways. COPO is specifically offered for off-highway, competitive NHRA use only.

2011 Chevrolet COPO Camaro

 

The 2011 Mustang is new in a lot of ways, but the styling was left alone after the 2010 update, so that’s where Tony and Galpin Auto Sports started. A 0-mile Mustang GT was secured and shipped directly to Galpin’s shop, where the transformation took place. The first change was the addition of a Street Scene body kit, which includes a custom front fascia, rocker skirts, upper and lower side scoops, a new rear valence, as well as a trick wing that is surprisingly low profile in today’s tuner world. Brilliant silver paint covers every inch of the bodywork, and has been polished and buffed well beyond factory specification. Black graphics were added, a design that echoes the past greats like the Boss 302, but with a modern twist. The hood was also blacked-out and creates a stripe that extends to the rear deck lid and even between the tail lights, and a custom Tony Hawk logo was emblazoned on its surface, reminiscent of a 21st century Firebird. Gothic-looking Tony Hawk initials adorn the front fenders and Tony’s signature has been added to the rear bumper. Nobody is going to mistake this for a garden-variety Mustang. Read more! Other details include a trick black grille with center-mounted driving lights, tinted headlight covers, and darker than stock tail light lenses. The glass has been tinted to give it a sinister, purposeful look, and even the gas cap wears a Tony Hawk emblem. Nobody can say these guys weren’t thorough there are hundreds of special parts made just for this car.

The all-new Ford 5.0 liter V8 is an impressive piece of machinery. With exactly nothing in common with the old pushrod 5.0, this modern all-aluminum powerplant churns out 412 horsepower in stock form, but with upgrades like a Flowmaster exhaust system, it now makes an estimated 425 for the Tony Hawk special. Ford designers knew that folks would be eager to look under the hood of the new Mustang, so the engine is well dressed with exposed intake runners, a chrome 5.0 badge, and cool “Powered by Ford” cam covers. With only 225 miles on the clock, most of which were accumulated cruising around the fairgrounds at the Barrett-Jackson automobile auction, the engine is like new in every way and is still under the factory warranty.

The transmission is a 6-speed automatic with quick reflexes, so you don’t have to worry about shifting when you’re standing on the loud pedal, and it spins the optional factory 3.15 rear gear. The Mustang’s suspension was lowered using Ford Racing performance springs, but it still rides surprisingly well thanks to the sturdy body structure and stock shocks. That Flowmaster exhaust I mentioned earlier most definitely flows better than stock and makes one heck of a nasty rumble on the street. To help with the project and the charitable foundation behind it, DUB contributed a set of gorgeous 22-inch TIS three-piece wheels dressed in sinister high-gloss black and wearing 245/30/22 front and 265/30/22 rear Pirelli P Zero Nero tires.

The interior, while retaining the cool retro feel of the Mustangs stock setup, has been fully reupholstered using Katzkin black leather with white stitching. Looking suitably Steve McQueen, the seats offer inserts that look a lot like the old Ford Comfort-Weave vinyl but it’s ever so much softer and more durable. The rear bench has been upholstered to match, and offers deeply sculpted buckets that actually look like they’ll help hold rear passengers in place. The fantastic Mustang dashboard remains intact with its cool 60s inspired gauge faces and beautifully detailed center console with piano black inserts. A massive JP Audio system delivers enough volume to make your ears bleed, thanks to a pair of huge Xplod subwoofers mounted in a trunk enclosure. Mustang GTs come loaded, so this one includes A/C, power windows, cruise control, keyless entry, a tilt column, rear defrost, and automatic headlights. Nice!

Documentation is exactly what you need in a car like this, and fortunately, it comes with a lot of it. We have the original window sticker, original purchase order, and all the original manuals. We also have the original vehicle transfer forms and documents, since the car was sold to its first owner, Wing Lam (co-founder of the Wahoo Fish Taco chain), who purchased it at the charity auction and subsequently sold it again to benefit charity. More significantly, however, this car also includes a custom-built and autographed Tony Hawk skateboard, an autographed T-shirt, as well as a replacement hood decal should it ever be damaged.

This car has already had a very high-profile life, and as Wing Lam learned, you can’t sneak around when you’re behind the wheel of this incredible Mustang. It has also done its job, raising tens of thousands of dollars for charities like the Tony Hawk Foundation and the Center of Living Peace in Orange County, California. This is an opportunity to pick up a very famous car with substantial celebrity connections, which also happens to be a killer street machine. It will be the star of any show it attends, and it’s an absolute blast to drive. If you crave attention, there aren’t many better cars than this to satisfy that craving.
